Did you know?

Does an ostrich really hide its head in the sand in case of danger?

The idea that an ostrich hides its head in the sand in case of danger is not true. Observations of naturalists for about 200 thousand ostriches for 80 years did not reveal a single such case.

Where the legend came from is unknown.

 Random interesting fact from the Great Encyclopedia:

How are flies born?

Everyone knows that flies are carriers of infection. The fly is born and spends most of its life near garbage and other places favorable for the development of bacteria. In fact, this damp, decaying matter is the most optimal breeding ground for flies. Here the female lays white eggs (about 1,2 mm in size), from which thin, worm-like, legless larvae emerge. This is the "feeding" stage of the fly's life. Five or six days later, the skin of the larva thickens and turns brownish and the fly's life enters a resting stage: the larva becomes a chrysalis.

After another 5-6 days, an adult fly appears from the pupa shell. The size of this fly does not change in the future: large flies do not grow out of small ones. Another 10 days later, the fly mates, and a little later the female lays 100 to 150 eggs! Not all types of flies breed like houseflies.

Some hatch eggs in themselves and give birth to live larvae, and some species lay eggs that are already in the pupal stage. Due to the fact that flies carry diseases, a person is constantly fighting them. It is best to kill flies in winter or early spring. During this cold season, the flies hide in dark, warm corners and are very hungry all the time, so they are easy to catch and kill.

Machine for thinning flowers in gardens 02.05.2024

In modern agriculture, technological progress is developing aimed at increasing the efficiency of plant care processes. The innovative Florix flower thinning machine was presented in Italy, designed to optimize the harvesting stage. This tool is equipped with mobile arms, allowing it to be easily adapted to the needs of the garden. The operator can adjust the speed of the thin wires by controlling them from the tractor cab using a joystick. This approach significantly increases the efficiency of the flower thinning process, providing the possibility of individual adjustment to the specific conditions of the garden, as well as the variety and type of fruit grown in it. After testing the Florix machine for two years on various types of fruit, the results were very encouraging. Farmers such as Filiberto Montanari, who has used a Florix machine for several years, have reported a significant reduction in the time and labor required to thin flowers. ... >>

Advanced Infrared Microscope 02.05.2024

Microscopes play an important role in scientific research, allowing scientists to delve into structures and processes invisible to the eye. However, various microscopy methods have their limitations, and among them was the limitation of resolution when using the infrared range. But the latest achievements of Japanese researchers from the University of Tokyo open up new prospects for studying the microworld. Scientists from the University of Tokyo have unveiled a new microscope that will revolutionize the capabilities of infrared microscopy. This advanced instrument allows you to see the internal structures of living bacteria with amazing clarity on the nanometer scale. Typically, mid-infrared microscopes are limited by low resolution, but the latest development from Japanese researchers overcomes these limitations. According to scientists, the developed microscope allows creating images with a resolution of up to 120 nanometers, which is 30 times higher than the resolution of traditional microscopes. ... >>

Air trap for insects 01.05.2024

Agriculture is one of the key sectors of the economy, and pest control is an integral part of this process. A team of scientists from the Indian Council of Agricultural Research-Central Potato Research Institute (ICAR-CPRI), Shimla, has come up with an innovative solution to this problem - a wind-powered insect air trap. This device addresses the shortcomings of traditional pest control methods by providing real-time insect population data. The trap is powered entirely by wind energy, making it an environmentally friendly solution that requires no power. Its unique design allows monitoring of both harmful and beneficial insects, providing a complete overview of the population in any agricultural area. “By assessing target pests at the right time, we can take necessary measures to control both pests and diseases,” says Kapil ... >>

Criteria for selecting tourists for space flight 23.05.2021

The company of the American billionaire Jeff Bezos Blue Origin has named the selection criteria for future space tourists. Among the requirements for applicants are both exclusively legal and physiological, due to the peculiarities of rocket flights.

For example, a person must be of legal age in their country of residence and the United States, and have documents that will allow him to get to the launch site in Texas.

Physiological parameters for an astronaut: from 152 to 195 cm and from 50 to 101 kg, respectively. Physical fitness should also be at a high level. So, the astronaut must pass a series of tests, including:

- Climb to the very top of the maintenance tower and board the New Shepard capsule, over 21 meters high, in less than 90 seconds (seven steep flights of stairs);
- not to experience fear or stress at such a height (approximately equal to the sensations from the open balcony on the seventh floor, only there is a rocket very close by);
- independently fasten and unfasten the belts of your seat in less than 15 seconds;
- spend 40 to 90 minutes (in case of delayed start) in a reclining position without getting up and without having to use the toilet;
- not to experience discomfort if necessary, spend in the above position from 40 to 90 minutes with five other people in a closed capsule (located on top of a fueled rocket);
- without problems to withstand overloads in the amount of three units (3G) for about two minutes during the operation of the main engine of the booster;
- without problems to withstand an overload of up to five and a half units (5,5G) for several seconds, during the return of the capsule to the atmosphere.

Also, flight participants will have to quickly respond to the signals of the panel in front of their seat, where various indicators are located.
