Why does silver tarnish?

Silver is a precious metal with remarkable properties. It has been known to man and used by him since the dawn of history. Silver conducts electricity and heat better than all other metals. It is the whitest metal. Silver reflects light more than other metals, which is why it is used for mirror coatings.

Silver is very easy to shape. Only gold is more accessible for processing. To increase the strength of silver, other metals are added to it. Silver of the established sample contains 92,5 percent pure silver and 7,5 percent copper.

People who use silver things do not like that it begins to darken over time. The reason for this is that silver easily reacts with sulfur and sulfur compounds and forms black silver sulfides, the coating of which we notice on silver things. Sulfur compounds are found in some foods, such as eggs. They are also found in very small amounts in the ambient air, especially when buildings are heated with coal or oil products.

In nature, silver sometimes occurs in its pure form, in the form of ingots. But more often it is found in a mixture with other metals and non-metallic substances in the composition of mineral ores.

Artificial leather for touch emulation 15.04.2024

In a modern technology world where distance is becoming increasingly commonplace, maintaining connection and a sense of closeness is important. Recent developments in artificial skin by German scientists from Saarland University represent a new era in virtual interactions. German researchers from Saarland University have developed ultra-thin films that can transmit the sensation of touch over a distance. This cutting-edge technology provides new opportunities for virtual communication, especially for those who find themselves far from their loved ones. The ultra-thin films developed by the researchers, just 50 micrometers thick, can be integrated into textiles and worn like a second skin. These films act as sensors that recognize tactile signals from mom or dad, and as actuators that transmit these movements to the baby. Parents' touch to the fabric activates sensors that react to pressure and deform the ultra-thin film. This ... >>

The benefits of a four-day work week have been proven 04.03.2023

In the UK, an experiment has come to an end in which more than 60 companies reduced the working hours of their employees by 20% - for six months they worked only four days a week. And because of this, their well-being and health improved.

The study was conducted by a team of scientists from the University of Cambridge, Boston College and the British think tank Autonomy. The experiment involved about 2 employees from industries ranging from IT and financial services to healthcare.

As early as three months after the start of the experiment, when company executives summed up intermediate results, the positive effects of a four-day work week were observed. They confirmed the results of similar but smaller projects in the US and Ireland.

And six months later, the results were generally excellent. 71% of employees said they had reduced work fatigue, and 39% experienced less stress in the workplace.

The four-day week also had a positive effect on work-life balance. Combining "two lives" has become easier for 62% of workers. Another 60% noted that the new schedule allowed them to spend more time with their children.

The experiment had a positive effect on the health of employees. The number of sick leave decreased by 65%.

Companies also benefited: layoffs decreased by 57%, while revenues increased by an average of 1,4%. This refutes the popular belief that reducing the number of working days reduces productivity.
