A plant of the Sumac family (Anacardiaceae), a species of the genus Pistachio, common in the Mediterranean countries.

Evergreen shrub or small tree up to 4-5 m tall with a tent-like crown and dark bark. The leaves are alternate. The flowers are small greenish, collected in brushes. The fruits are drupes 4-5 mm in diameter with a pointed top.

The range extends from the Canary Islands, Morocco and Spain in the west to Turkey, Syria and Israel in the east.

Resin is obtained from male trees - mastic (or mastic), which is a product of the isolation of schizolisogenic balsam channels of the secondary bark of trunks and branches. Mastic contains more than 90% rezenes and resin acids, 1-3% essential oil. The essential oil contains pinene, which gives the mastic a turpentine smell.

Mastic is used as a tincture for lubricating gums and dental fillings and as a wound healing agent. Poor-quality mastic, also obtained from other types of pistachio, is used for the manufacture of varnishes and adhesives.

  • Treatment of indigestion: Add 1-2 teaspoons of finely ground mastic tree resin to a glass of warm water. The drink is recommended to be consumed before meals to improve digestion and reduce symptoms associated with gastric disorders.
