When you experiment with adjusting the aperture, when you open it, the indicator will show the transition from F8 to F4 and F2.

The OPEN indicator in the viewfinder will then light up. In this state, the diaphragm is fully open and maximum light flux passes through the lens. Further opening of the diaphragm is conditional, in fact, further occurs, amplification of the electrical signal received by the CCD matrix.

The gain level meter will show a change from +3 to +18 dB. And as practice shows, any forced increase in the signal makes the picture noisy. The more gain, the more noise.

If the camcorder is left to the mercy of the automatic regulator, it will open the aperture to failure and set the gain to +18 dB, trying to turn the candlelit scene into a sunlit lawn.

As a result, a complete set of noise is guaranteed, and the image will look worse than on VHS after the 5th rewrite.

There is a legitimate question how to deal with it? Of course, some cameras have relatively good modes that allow you to ensure a minimum level of noise. Such as Twilight Mode (twilight).

This sets the shutter speed to 1/60s and the gain is capped at +6dB. Similar modes are available in other camcorders. In low (but not too) light conditions, Twilight Mode provides good results with a minimum of effort.

But despite this, in many cases at low light levels you will still have to control the camera manually. What should be done. First, you should set the shutter speed to 1/60s or 1/30s. Secondly, try to raise the gain to a level where the picture is already satisfactory, and the noise level is still acceptable.

The main thing is not to overdo it, gain above +9 dB is undesirable; Shutter speeds slower than 1/30 s should only be used when you or your subject are not going to make fast movements, such as panning the camera, running. Otherwise, a stroboscopic effect will result.

In any conditions with manual control, the noise level is always much lower and the details are more clearly drawn, unless, of course, you know how to control your camcorder well.

Sony FDR-X3000R compact camcorder 04.09.2016
