Wild Landowner

Saltykov-Shchedrin M.E.
Saltykov-Shchedrin M.E.

Phraseologism: Wild landowner.

Meaning: Synonym for tyrant, retrograde.

Origin: The title of a satirical tale (1869) by M.E. Saltykov-Shchedrin about a landowner who dreamed of improving his farm by completely "reducing", abolishing the peasant, he prayed to God for the disappearance of the peasants, harassed them with fines, until, finally, they all disappeared. Saltykov's satire is directed against stubborn feudal lords who, on the eve of the peasant reform, tried to prevent a change in the old order, and when, contrary to their hopes, the reform was nevertheless carried out, they tried to weaken it by all sorts of measures.

Random phraseology:

And they went with the burning sun.

Meaning:

About those whose calculations did not come true, who did not achieve their goals, left without salty slurping (jokingly-iron.).

Origin:

From the poem "Reflections at the front door" (1858) by N. A. Nekrasov (1821-1877): "And the door slammed. They went like a burning sun, // Repeating: "God judge him!", // Spreading hopelessly their hands, // And, as long as I could see them, // They walked with their heads uncovered..."

Artificial leather for touch emulation 15.04.2024

In a modern technology world where distance is becoming increasingly commonplace, maintaining connection and a sense of closeness is important. Recent developments in artificial skin by German scientists from Saarland University represent a new era in virtual interactions. German researchers from Saarland University have developed ultra-thin films that can transmit the sensation of touch over a distance. This cutting-edge technology provides new opportunities for virtual communication, especially for those who find themselves far from their loved ones. The ultra-thin films developed by the researchers, just 50 micrometers thick, can be integrated into textiles and worn like a second skin. These films act as sensors that recognize tactile signals from mom or dad, and as actuators that transmit these movements to the baby. Parents' touch to the fabric activates sensors that react to pressure and deform the ultra-thin film. This ... >>

The attractiveness of caring men 14.04.2024

The stereotype that women prefer "bad boys" has long been widespread. However, recent research conducted by British scientists from Monash University offers a new perspective on this issue. They looked at how women responded to men's emotional responsibility and willingness to help others. The study's findings could change our understanding of what makes men attractive to women. A study conducted by scientists from Monash University leads to new findings about men's attractiveness to women. In the experiment, women were shown photographs of men with brief stories about their behavior in various situations, including their reaction to an encounter with a homeless person. Some of the men ignored the homeless man, while others helped him, such as buying him food. A study found that men who showed empathy and kindness were more attractive to women compared to men who showed empathy and kindness. ... >>

robot plant 18.11.2019

Engineers from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT, USA) have developed a robot that can lengthen, "building up" new links. At the same time, its entire chain is flexible enough to bend and turn, and at the same time rigid to withstand heavy loads. The robot can change its length and shape by removing links or adding new ones.

The scientists developed the design of the robot, inspired by the way plants grow: nutrients rise up to the tip of the plant, where it then gradually forms a dense structure, such as a stem or side shoots.

The robot operates in much the same way: it consists of a drive box - a "growth point" - that pulls a loose chain of links ("nutrients") into the box. The gears in the box then block the chain links and bring the chain out again - but in a locked position. From this chain, it seems that a strong stem is obtained, which holds a heavy "flower" for sure - a gearbox.

The researchers presented the "growing robot" at the IEEE International Conference on Intelligent Robots and Systems (IROS) in Macau, China. They suggest that the robot's drive box could be fitted with grippers, cameras, and other sensors, allowing it to slip, for example, through an aircraft's propulsion system and tighten a loose propeller, or reach a shelf and pick up product without disturbing the organization of the surrounding inventory.
