Origin: The opening line from the poem "Everything is plundered, betrayed, sold ..." (June, 1921) by the Russian poetess Anna Andreevna Akhmatova (pseudonym A. A. Gorenko, 1889-1966): "Everything is plundered, betrayed, sold, // Black Death a wing flickered, // Everything was gnawed away by hungry melancholy, // Why did it become light for us?

The expression gained great popularity after the appearance of the drama by L. Tolstoy "The Power of Darkness, or the Claw got stuck - the whole bird is abyss" (1886), which quickly began to be called briefly: "The Power of Darkness". In accordance with the content of the play, which describes the way of life in the Russian village, this expression has become a symbol of aggressive ignorance and cultural backwardness. The title of this play prompted the well-known journalist and wit of his time Vladimir Gilyarovsky (1853-1935) to write (1886) the famous impromptu: "There are two misfortunes in Russia: // Below - the power of darkness. // And above - the darkness of power." |
