Maingear has announced the Maingear Pulse 17 gaming laptop. According to the manufacturer, this model is the thinnest and most compact 17-inch gaming laptop in the world.

The standard equipment of the notebook includes a 17,3-inch anti-glare matte display with a resolution of 1920 x 1080 pixels; quad-core processor Intel Core i7-4700HQ (2,4-3,4 GHz); 16 GB DDR3-1600 MHz RAM (two 8 GB modules); graphics accelerator Nvidia GeForce GTX 765M; 1TB hard drive and 256GB SSD.

The Maingear Pulse 17 features a multi-color backlit keyboard from SteelSeries. There is also a DVD drive, a 2 MP webcam, a 7-in-1 card reader, an HDMI output, audio jacks, four USB 3.0 ports, two Mini DisplayPort ports, 802.11n Wi-Fi and Bluetooth modules, and a port for connecting a network cable.

Separately noted is the Creative Sound Blaster Cinema audio system, which includes two speakers and a subwoofer. For a fee, it is possible to increase the capacity of the solid state drive up to 512 GB, replace the DVD drive with a Blu-ray burner, and also install an 802.11ac Wi-Fi module.

The laptop measures 418,3 x 286,7 x 21,6 mm and weighs 2,72 kg.

The Maingear Pulse 17 gaming laptop will be available soon for $2099 and will be available in six colors.

Bluetooth bulbs and smart home sensors 02.09.2014

The concept of a smart home has been around for a long time, but so far it is slowly gaining popularity. The more interesting is the emergence of new devices created for such households. Elgato has introduced a new $50 Avea smart light bulb that can connect to iOS devices via Bluetooth, giving the user the ability to control the lighting in the room (you can choose different light bulb temperature - seven dynamic scenes and colors are available).

With a single device (iPhone 4S and above, iPod Touch 5 and above, or iPad 3 and above), the user can control an array of these bulbs throughout the house, as well as set various lighting presets. There is also an alarm function when the 7W LED bulb turns on at maximum light (430 lumens - equivalent to a 40W incandescent bulb).

Together with Avea, the Elgato smart home has a whole range of other Eve series sensors that allow you to evaluate air quality, temperature, humidity levels, take into account the volume of energy and water consumption. All of these sensors use Bluetooth and are compatible with the Apple HomeKit network protocol.

Using a set of such sensors, the user will be able to monitor the state of his home through iOS devices and control the sensors through the Siri voice assistant. Sounds interesting, but the price of the Eve sensors has not yet been announced: they will be shown in Germany at IFA 2014, and the market launch is promised soon.
