Proverbs and sayings

Meaning: It is dishonest to use the results of someone else's labor (disapproved).

Origin: The turnover arose from the proverb "It is easy to rake the heat with the wrong hands." The heat here is "hot coals without a flame". Wed the French expression "tirer les marrons du feu" - "to pull chestnuts out of the fire" - a catchphrase from La Fontaine's fable "The Monkey and the Cat" (1678), the plot of which, possibly, goes back to Aesop's fable. The monkey forces the Cat to get roasted chestnuts out of the fire for her. The cat, burning its paws, does this, and the Monkey regales itself with chestnuts.

Artificial leather for touch emulation 15.04.2024

In a modern technology world where distance is becoming increasingly commonplace, maintaining connection and a sense of closeness is important. Recent developments in artificial skin by German scientists from Saarland University represent a new era in virtual interactions. German researchers from Saarland University have developed ultra-thin films that can transmit the sensation of touch over a distance. This cutting-edge technology provides new opportunities for virtual communication, especially for those who find themselves far from their loved ones. The ultra-thin films developed by the researchers, just 50 micrometers thick, can be integrated into textiles and worn like a second skin. These films act as sensors that recognize tactile signals from mom or dad, and as actuators that transmit these movements to the baby. Parents' touch to the fabric activates sensors that react to pressure and deform the ultra-thin film. This ... >>

The first wars in human history 04.01.2005

When did people start fighting among themselves? Archaeologists have studied the remains of ancient human settlements in the Oaxaca Valley (Mexico).

Approximately 3600 years ago, nomads began to establish permanent settlements here with adobe huts. In the largest of the villages, there were more than a hundred inhabitants. As shown by carbon isotope dating, 200-300 years after the founding of these settlements, they began to be surrounded by high wooden fences. And two thousand years ago, many men who lived here began to wear metal helmets. Apparently, somewhere in this period, wars between people began.

The Mexican finds support the theory of the American anthropologist Raymond Kelly, according to which nomadic hunter-gatherer societies had murders but no fights between large groups of people.

When permanent settlements arose, relations between people changed, and the essence of conflicts also changed. The killing of one villager came to be seen as an attack on the entire village, for which the enemies should be avenged. Entire armed crowds began to gather on a campaign against a neighboring settlement. The militancy of the ancients intensified when the prosperity of the villages increased: for the sake of rich booty, it was worth going on a campaign.
