Bear self-treatment

21.06.2017

Zoologists have long noticed that bears often peel the bark from trees and lick a thin layer of cambium from under it - this is the name of the educational tissue up to 1 centimeter thick, from which all other tree cells develop.

Some scientists believe that such unusual behavior of predators helps them get additional food, but according to Russian researchers, this hypothesis is incorrect. The nutritional value of cambium, according to them, is many times less than the energy costs for its extraction.

In order to understand the true reasons for this unusual behavior of predators, scientists collected samples of damaged trees in Primorsky Krai and on Sakhalin Island. In these places, bears most often peel off white-bark firs, and therefore the study focused on these trees.

The scientists analyzed the chemical composition of the cambium from damaged trees using mass spectrometry. It turned out that these samples contain many different antioxidants, as well as probiotics.

Therefore, according to scientists, bears “extract” cambium primarily to maintain a balanced composition of their own microflora and as a biologically active food supplement.

Traffic noise delays the growth of chicks 06.05.2024

The sounds that surround us in modern cities are becoming increasingly piercing. However, few people think about how this noise affects the animal world, especially such delicate creatures as chicks that have not yet hatched from their eggs. Recent research is shedding light on this issue, indicating serious consequences for their development and survival. Scientists have found that exposure of zebra diamondback chicks to traffic noise can cause serious disruption to their development. Experiments have shown that noise pollution can significantly delay their hatching, and those chicks that do emerge face a number of health-promoting problems. The researchers also found that the negative effects of noise pollution extend into the adult birds. Reduced chances of reproduction and decreased fertility indicate the long-term effects that traffic noise has on wildlife. The study results highlight the need ... >>

A New Way to Control and Manipulate Optical Signals 05.05.2024

The modern world of science and technology is developing rapidly, and every day new methods and technologies appear that open up new prospects for us in various fields. One such innovation is the development by German scientists of a new way to control optical signals, which could lead to significant progress in the field of photonics. Recent research has allowed German scientists to create a tunable waveplate inside a fused silica waveguide. This method, based on the use of a liquid crystal layer, allows one to effectively change the polarization of light passing through a waveguide. This technological breakthrough opens up new prospects for the development of compact and efficient photonic devices capable of processing large volumes of data. The electro-optical control of polarization provided by the new method could provide the basis for a new class of integrated photonic devices. This opens up great opportunities for ... >>

The world's tallest astronomical observatory opened 04.05.2024

Exploring space and its mysteries is a task that attracts the attention of astronomers from all over the world. In the fresh air of the high mountains, far from city light pollution, the stars and planets reveal their secrets with greater clarity. A new page is opening in the history of astronomy with the opening of the world's highest astronomical observatory - the Atacama Observatory of the University of Tokyo. The Atacama Observatory, located at an altitude of 5640 meters above sea level, opens up new opportunities for astronomers in the study of space. This site has become the highest location for a ground-based telescope, providing researchers with a unique tool for studying infrared waves in the Universe. Although the high altitude location provides clearer skies and less interference from the atmosphere, building an observatory on a high mountain poses enormous difficulties and challenges. However, despite the difficulties, the new observatory opens up broad research prospects for astronomers. ... >>

Tablet Asus MeMO Pad 7 10.09.2014

Asus has introduced a new MeMO Pad 7 (ME572C/CL) tablet with Android 4.4 (KitKat) operating system. The tablet implements the user interface ZenUI, which is distinguished by the convenience of presenting information, Asus told CNews. This interface was designed specifically for Asus mobile devices.

The MeMO Pad 7 features a 7-inch multi-touch IPS display with an oleophobic coating, 1920 x 1200 pixels (323 ppi) resolution and wide (178°) viewing angles for crisp images. Asus TruVivid technology contributes to accurate color reproduction and increased screen brightness. In addition to watching movies or photos on the tablet itself, MeMO Pad 7 can be used as a portable multimedia center that connects to other devices such as TVs or monitors. To stream multimedia files over a wireless network, the tablet supports the Miracast standard, and with an appropriate Bluetooth headset, the user will be able to enjoy high-quality sound with CSR aptX encoding, the company said.

The tablet has two built-in cameras: 5-megapixel rear and 2-megapixel front. Many additional functions developed by Asus specialists will help you to get high-quality photos and videos.

MeMO Pad 7 (ME572C/CL) is powered by a 64-bit quad-core Atom Z4 processor, which is also highly energy efficient. The tablet is available in two versions: Wi-Fi only or Wi-Fi + LTE. The latest version is equipped with XMM 3560 high-speed LTE module optimized for low power consumption in both active and sleep modes. MeMO Pad 7160 is compatible with most of the world's LTE frequency bands.

Thanks to its duralumin frame and fiberglass body, the Asus MeMO Pad 7 (ME572C/CL) boasts increased durability despite its sleekness.
