Liana Liana

Basic scientific information, legends, myths, symbolism

Liana is the general name for plants that are used for support or support, such as trees, poles, rocks, or other plants. They belong to different families and genera, their distribution area and chemical composition can vary significantly depending on the species.

Vines are found in various parts of the world, from tropical rainforests to temperate zones, and can be either green or semi-sluggish. They are used to provide support for other plants such as epiphytes, and to produce materials such as fringes, fabrics, baskets and furniture. In medicine, creepers can be used to treat various diseases.

Legends, myths, symbolism: In the ancient mythologies of South America, the creeper was associated with a human god who was created from the leaves and roots of the plant. It was said that this god had magical powers that allowed him to control the forest and animals. In traditional Chinese medicine, creeper root has been used to treat various ailments such as arthritis and heart disease. It has also been used as a tonic to improve overall health. In the culture of the Amazonian Indians, the creeper was used in rituals associated with initiation rites, and was considered a symbol of rebirth and rebirth. Symbolically, the liana was associated with the concept of life, growth, connections and resilience. She was also associated with magic and mystical powers that could penetrate barriers.

Liana
Strongylodon macrobotrys

In the rainforest, our stop is at the plants, which turned out to be among the most adapted to life here.

These are creepers. They are like snakes. Imagine ... However, why imagine - you yourself have seen lianas, yes, probably more than once. After all, ivy, vetch, peas, pumpkin are also creepers, although they, of course, are only a faint resemblance to those that grow in the tropics. Here, many of these snake-like plants have become like trees, only with a flexible trunk. It is as thick as the hand of an adult, and often more.

Creepers are everywhere in the rainforest.

They, like thick ropes, braid trees and shrubs, are thrown from branch to branch, stretch here and there, hang down like rigging on a ship, and, like snakes, lie on the ground in huge twists. It's like they're crawling...

Shoots of vines do not differ from young sprouts of other plants. But now their flexible trunk lengthens so much that it can no longer stand "on its feet" without support, and it falls to the ground. But near the ground in the rainforest it is always gloomy and damp, and creepers love the light so much! Persistently grows, their flexible trunk creeps along the damp red earth to the nearest tree. Having reached the support tree, the vine grows and climbs along its trunk.

The most, one might say, famous among climbing vines are rattan palms. They live in the forests of India and neighboring regions, as well as on the islands of the Indian and Pacific Oceans. There are a great many of these palm-vines here, and we will quickly make out them in dense thickets.

Here are the winding loops of mossy, as if in a plush case, rattan lying on the ground. And over there, further on, this creeper reached, crawled up to a tall tree. She had already climbed up it, already disappeared with her tip in the mass of his leaves. The rattan is firmly held between the branches and climbs higher and higher as it grows.

Like any palm tree, rattan has beautiful feathery leaves. But each rattan sheet has another extension - a thin whip with sharp curved spikes at the end. With these hooks, the vine clings to the trunk and branches of the support. Growing up, throwing out new whips with spiked hooks, rattans reach the highest floors of the forest. Here, where there is plenty of sun and space, the vine branches, forms a lush crown.

Liana

The time comes, and the liana blooms flowers - a sign of the victory that the plant won in the difficult struggle for light.

And, pay attention, for this victory, the liana does not need, like a tree, to build up a thick, powerful trunk. But she drives him in length to an incredible size, the largest in terrestrial plants - up to 300, and sometimes up to 350 meters! Such a liana could reach the very spire of the 32-storey building of Moscow University!

And some tropical creepers have received gloomy, downright ominous nicknames. And not without reason.

In South America, for example, vines grow, which in Spanish are called "sipo-matador", which means "killer vine". Especially in this role, a relative of the ficus familiar to us, the ficus-strangler liana, became famous. Its seeds germinate high above the ground, somewhere in the fork of the branches of large trees, just like the lodger-orchid. But unlike an orchid, the liana persistently reaches for the ground with its aerial roots. On the way, it braids the trunk of the support with its roots, and reaching for the soil, it takes root in it, like an ordinary plant.

Time passes, and the tree, so to speak, which has shown hospitality to the creeper, dies in the close embrace of its roots, closed from the light by its overgrown crown. And the adult ficus-strangler, which has grown stronger by that time, grows further on its own or starts a new shoot that reaches the new victim, and everything repeats all over again.

Creepers are plants that grow around other plants or objects for support and access to sunlight. They can be both evergreen and falling, with flowers, berries or other decorative elements.

Tips for growing vines vary by species. Here are some general recommendations:

  • Creepers often need good support in order to grow. Place them near walls, fences, or other supports so they can climb up and develop.
  • The soil should be nutritious and well drained.
  • Creepers often need full sunlight, but some can survive in partial shade.
  • It is important to ensure that the plant does not become too heavy for its support. Certain types of vines can become very heavy and require stronger supports, such as metal frames or stone walls.

Procurement and storage depend on the particular species. The berries and fruits can be refrigerated, and the leaves and flowers can be used for drying or canning.

Some popular types of vines include grapes, roses, hydrangeas, jasmine, ivy, and clematis.

Alcohol content of warm beer 07.05.2024

Beer, as one of the most common alcoholic drinks, has its own unique taste, which can change depending on the temperature of consumption. A new study by an international team of scientists has found that beer temperature has a significant impact on the perception of alcoholic taste. The study, led by materials scientist Lei Jiang, found that at different temperatures, ethanol and water molecules form different types of clusters, which affects the perception of alcoholic taste. At low temperatures, more pyramid-like clusters form, which reduces the pungency of the "ethanol" taste and makes the drink taste less alcoholic. On the contrary, as the temperature increases, the clusters become more chain-like, resulting in a more pronounced alcoholic taste. This explains why the taste of some alcoholic drinks, such as baijiu, can change depending on temperature. The data obtained opens up new prospects for beverage manufacturers, ... >>
