Artificial leather for touch emulation 15.04.2024

In a modern technology world where distance is becoming increasingly commonplace, maintaining connection and a sense of closeness is important. Recent developments in artificial skin by German scientists from Saarland University represent a new era in virtual interactions. German researchers from Saarland University have developed ultra-thin films that can transmit the sensation of touch over a distance. This cutting-edge technology provides new opportunities for virtual communication, especially for those who find themselves far from their loved ones. The ultra-thin films developed by the researchers, just 50 micrometers thick, can be integrated into textiles and worn like a second skin. These films act as sensors that recognize tactile signals from mom or dad, and as actuators that transmit these movements to the baby. Parents' touch to the fabric activates sensors that react to pressure and deform the ultra-thin film. This ... >>

Boots for the blind 18.05.2021

Scientists have come up with shoes for people who suffer from vision loss. So, special boots were created that warn the person who put them on about obstacles in front of him. To do this, they use sensors and cameras.

The new development is called InnoMake. Its authors are Austrian engineers who are involved in the startup Tec-Innovation.

The boots are equipped with a proximity sensor module that works like a sonar. It is installed on the toe. The device receives the reflection of obstacles in the path of the walker.

With the help of a tactile communication system, a person receives information that there is an object in front of him and that he needs to bypass it. Information can also be obtained on a smartphone that connects to the boots via Bluetooth. The user will be alerted with an audible signal.
