I do not agree with any word that you say, but I am ready to die for your right to say this

Evelyn Hall
Evelyn Hall

Phraseologism: I don't agree with a single word you say, but I'm willing to die for your right to say it.

Meaning: On the principles of freedom of speech, democracy.

Origin: An expression attributed to Voltaire (without specifying the work). In fact, the authorship belongs to the English writer Evelyn Hall and was mentioned in her biography of Voltaire "The Friends of Voltaire" (1906): "I disapprove of what you say, but I will defend to the death your right to say it".

Random phraseology:

Serve as a goat in the stable.

Meaning:

To mess around, to spend time aimlessly (obsolete. iron.).

Origin:

The expression is associated with the custom of keeping a goat in the stable to scare away evil spirits from horses. The goat was considered a representative of evil spirits, there was an opinion among the people that the goat was a prototype of the devil and in general a "demonic animal" (such an idea of a goat developed because of its horns and specific smell). V. I. Dal in the essay "Domovoi", describing the brownie in detail (of course, based on folk legends), says: "... He is especially eager for horses: he cleans them with a comber, strokes, grooms, braids manes and tails, trims his ears and brushes, sometimes he will sit on a horse at night and set an end or two in the village ... In what kind of relationship he has with a goat, it is not known, but the goat in the stable also removes or coaxes the brownie. Thus, the goat was kept in the stable so that the brownie would not drive the horses. But over time, people became convinced of the far-fetchedness of fears, and the expression acquired an allegorical meaning.

Artificial leather for touch emulation 15.04.2024

In a modern technology world where distance is becoming increasingly commonplace, maintaining connection and a sense of closeness is important. Recent developments in artificial skin by German scientists from Saarland University represent a new era in virtual interactions. German researchers from Saarland University have developed ultra-thin films that can transmit the sensation of touch over a distance. This cutting-edge technology provides new opportunities for virtual communication, especially for those who find themselves far from their loved ones. The ultra-thin films developed by the researchers, just 50 micrometers thick, can be integrated into textiles and worn like a second skin. These films act as sensors that recognize tactile signals from mom or dad, and as actuators that transmit these movements to the baby. Parents' touch to the fabric activates sensors that react to pressure and deform the ultra-thin film. This ... >>

The attractiveness of caring men 14.04.2024

The stereotype that women prefer "bad boys" has long been widespread. However, recent research conducted by British scientists from Monash University offers a new perspective on this issue. They looked at how women responded to men's emotional responsibility and willingness to help others. The study's findings could change our understanding of what makes men attractive to women. A study conducted by scientists from Monash University leads to new findings about men's attractiveness to women. In the experiment, women were shown photographs of men with brief stories about their behavior in various situations, including their reaction to an encounter with a homeless person. Some of the men ignored the homeless man, while others helped him, such as buying him food. A study found that men who showed empathy and kindness were more attractive to women compared to men who showed empathy and kindness. ... >>

Blind Spot Monitoring in Mercedes-Benz Trucks 09.09.2014

Daimler Trucks, which produces trucks under the Mercedes-Benz brand, has finalized the technology for monitoring "blind" zones, which is now widely used in passenger vehicles. Dubbed Blind Spot Assist, the system will allow truck drivers with long trailers to safely navigate through traffic and make turns at intersections.

The new development is based on the use of a radar sensor located near the rear axle on the side of the passenger seat. To search for objects that are dangerously close, the sensor scans the entire space along the heavy truck and a 2-meter section in front of the cab.

With the help of sound and light alerts, the system will tell the driver that there is a cyclist or a car in the invisible zone for him, so it is not safe to change lanes. In addition, Blind Spot Assist will help when cornering: if there is a risk of collision with stationary objects, such as a traffic light or a road sign, with a selected radius of movement of a truck with a trailer, the electronics will warn about this.

As reported by Daimler with reference to the German Insurers Association (German Insurance Association), the widespread introduction of a new technology for monitoring "dead" zones will help reduce the number of truck collisions with pedestrians and cyclists by 50%.
