Machine for thinning flowers in gardens 02.05.2024

In modern agriculture, technological progress is developing aimed at increasing the efficiency of plant care processes. The innovative Florix flower thinning machine was presented in Italy, designed to optimize the harvesting stage. This tool is equipped with mobile arms, allowing it to be easily adapted to the needs of the garden. The operator can adjust the speed of the thin wires by controlling them from the tractor cab using a joystick. This approach significantly increases the efficiency of the flower thinning process, providing the possibility of individual adjustment to the specific conditions of the garden, as well as the variety and type of fruit grown in it. After testing the Florix machine for two years on various types of fruit, the results were very encouraging. Farmers such as Filiberto Montanari, who has used a Florix machine for several years, have reported a significant reduction in the time and labor required to thin flowers. ... >>

Advanced Infrared Microscope 02.05.2024

Microscopes play an important role in scientific research, allowing scientists to delve into structures and processes invisible to the eye. However, various microscopy methods have their limitations, and among them was the limitation of resolution when using the infrared range. But the latest achievements of Japanese researchers from the University of Tokyo open up new prospects for studying the microworld. Scientists from the University of Tokyo have unveiled a new microscope that will revolutionize the capabilities of infrared microscopy. This advanced instrument allows you to see the internal structures of living bacteria with amazing clarity on the nanometer scale. Typically, mid-infrared microscopes are limited by low resolution, but the latest development from Japanese researchers overcomes these limitations. According to scientists, the developed microscope allows creating images with a resolution of up to 120 nanometers, which is 30 times higher than the resolution of traditional microscopes. ... >>

Air trap for insects 01.05.2024

Agriculture is one of the key sectors of the economy, and pest control is an integral part of this process. A team of scientists from the Indian Council of Agricultural Research-Central Potato Research Institute (ICAR-CPRI), Shimla, has come up with an innovative solution to this problem - a wind-powered insect air trap. This device addresses the shortcomings of traditional pest control methods by providing real-time insect population data. The trap is powered entirely by wind energy, making it an environmentally friendly solution that requires no power. Its unique design allows monitoring of both harmful and beneficial insects, providing a complete overview of the population in any agricultural area. “By assessing target pests at the right time, we can take necessary measures to control both pests and diseases,” says Kapil ... >>

Artificial retina will help the blind 01.09.2012

An artificial retina has been created that can restore normal vision even to completely blind people. Researchers at Weill Cornell Medical College have deciphered the neural network of the mouse retina. Thanks to this, it was possible to create an artificial eye, which made it possible to restore sight to blind mice. Moreover, the code of the retina of monkeys has already been "hacked" in a similar way - and it is almost identical to the human one. The authors of the discovery hope that they will be able to quickly develop and test a device that blind people can use to fully restore vision.

This breakthrough will give the blind the opportunity to fully restore normal vision, and not only see the contours of objects and spots of light, although this is already enough for orientation in space. The decoding of the code was successful, and the new device will allow you to see individual facial features. Currently, experimental animals can easily track moving images with it. In the future, scientists hope to create a small wearable device in the form of a hoop or glasses. This device will collect light and, with the help of computer chips, turn it into an electronic code that the human brain transforms into an image. The technology of converting light signals into electronic ones has long been mastered by mankind, so no problems are expected with this.

Blindness is often the result of diseases of the retina, but even if all photoreceptors are lost, as a rule, the nerve output pathway of the retina remains intact. Modern prostheses already use this fact: electrodes are implanted into the eye of a blind patient, stimulating ganglionic nerve cells. However, this technology gives only a blurry picture, in which only the contours of objects can be seen.

Other research groups are testing the use of photosensitive proteins as an alternative way to stimulate cells. These proteins are introduced into the retina using gene therapy. Once in the eye, they can stimulate many ganglion cells at once. So far, this technology has been successfully tested for safety for health. In any case, to form a clear picture, you need to know the code of the retina, a set of equations that nature uses to turn light into electrical impulses that the brain understands. Scientists have already tried to find it for simple objects, such as, for example, geometric shapes. Neurologist Dr. Sheila Nirenberg suggested that the code should be generic and work with figures as well as landscapes or human faces.

While working on the code, Nirenberg, she said, had an epiphany: she realized that it could be used for prosthetics. As a result, a simple experiment was prepared, during which a mini-projector, controlled by a decoded code, sent light pulses to light-sensitive proteins inserted into ganglion cells of mice using gene manipulation. Careful control of a series of experiments showed that the efficiency, i.e. the quality of vision even in a prosthesis hastily assembled in the laboratory practically coincides with that of a normal healthy mouse retina.

A new approach to treating visual impairment gives hope to the 25 million people worldwide who suffer from retinal blindness. Drug therapy helps only a few of them, and a perfect prosthesis will be extremely useful.
