Focus Description:

The artist picks up a handkerchief and gradually takes it inside the fist of his left hand, helping to tuck the handkerchief with his right hand. The handkerchief is clenched in the left fist. The magician takes out a “magic” wand from the left inner pocket and touches it to the fist in which the handkerchief is clamped, then he slowly opens his fist and the audience sees that the handkerchief has disappeared. The magician lights a candle standing on a table in a candlestick (Fig. 232, a) and, taking a nickel-plated tube lying next to the candle, looks through it at the candle and says that this candle seems suspicious to him. Then he takes the candle out of the candlestick and inserts it into the tube (Fig. 232b). Spectators see that the whole candle has passed into the tube and only a small light is visible from it (Fig. 232, c).

The magician takes two caps from the table and closes with one first the lower end of the tube, and then with the second cap the upper end. Spectators see that the tube into which the candle was inserted is closed with caps on both sides (Fig. 233, d). Immediately, the magician removes both caps from the pipe, and the audience sees how he pulls out the handkerchief that has just disappeared from the pipe. The magician looks through the tube - the candle has disappeared.

Focus secret:

The secret of the trick lies in the "candle", which consists of three parts (Fig. 234): b - this is a thin brass tube with a diameter of about 20 mm, a thickness of 0,4-0,5 mm and a length of 15 cm. it is strongly ground down so that, being placed in an outer case, on the one hand it would seem completely invisible. After the edges inside the tube are ground off, it should be painted with white enamel two or three times. When the tube dries well, it is rubbed with sandpaper so that it does not shine and becomes like a stearin candle. Then, the upper part of the "candle" is turned out of white plastic or from strong wood (Fig. 234, a).

Focus Hidden Candle
Fig. 234

The lower end of this part of the "candle" should enter the tube, and its sides should not protrude beyond the edges of the tube. A recess is made in the upper part of the "candle", into which a small piece of a real candle with a wick is inserted. A small copper plug is inserted into the lower part of the “candle” tube, the side part of which protrudes very slightly from the bottom beyond the edges of the tube. In the middle of both parts of the "candle" a and b there are threaded holes, in part a - from the bottom side, and in part b - from the top. The key e must be screwed into this thread. If you now put the upper and lower parts on the tube, then the “candle” for the focus is ready. It remains only to paint the upper part a so that it does not differ from a distance from the "candle" tube. The lower, copper part is not visible to the audience, since the "candle" will stand in the candlestick, and when it is taken in hand, this part will be hidden by the hand.

Now it is necessary for the “candle” to pick up a case (tube) so that the “candle” tube easily enters it without friction and fits snugly with its walls to the walls of the case. If you cannot get such a tube, you will have to make it and solder it from brass with a thickness of 1,5 mm. The length of the case is equal to the length of the "candle". On fig. 234 shows how parts a and c fit into caps d and e. These caps are machined from brass tubes. Inside, they are bored to the outer ends so that, being put on a case with a “candle” inside it, they tightly cover parts a and b and, when removed from the case, would remove these parts from the “candle”. So that these parts can be removed from the caps, a thread is made in the center of the parts and a key is made.

Having screwed the key into parts, they are carefully removed from the caps. Covers are soldered flush into the caps from the outside. In order not to confuse the caps, strips are applied to them with a cutter - on the top for part a one strip and on the bottom for part in two strips. First, a cap with one strip is put on, and then with two. The cap with one strip is also removed earlier, and then, passing the index finger of the left hand into the opened hole, you press the inner tube against the outer one so that when the lower cap is removed, the "candle" does not come out. The tube-case and caps should be well nickel-plated.

Focus preparation and demonstration:

In advance, a handkerchief is placed inside the "candle", a double of the one that should disappear. The "candle" is placed in a candlestick and a case and caps are placed next to it. This is the whole preparation, except for the fact that the magician puts a “magic” wand in the left inner pocket of his costume. Then the magician takes a handkerchief from the table with his right hand and puts it inside his clenched left fist, slightly pushing it from above with his left index finger. At the same time, both hands swing slightly up and down, helping the fingers to take the handkerchief into a fist. The magician all the time gradually and imperceptibly brings the right hand to the left fist, at the same time, with the little finger, middle and ring fingers of the left hand, rolls the handkerchief inside the fist into a compact ball. When this is done and only a small corner of the handkerchief remains on top of the fist, the magician sharply waves his hands and at the same time, with lightning speed, with the little finger and ring fingers of his right hand, snatches the handkerchief from his left fist, continuing to look at it as if the handkerchief is still in it. The right hand must now be taken away from the left.

The artist gradually turns to the audience with his left side, continuing to shake his left fist, and with his right hand he takes out a "magic" wand from his inner left pocket and leaves a handkerchief in his pocket. Then, bringing the wand to his fist, he lightly touches it and slowly opens his fist, following the imaginary flight of the handkerchief with his eyes. Then the magician, as if continuing to look for a handkerchief, draws attention to the "candle".

In this issue, the choice of successful distractions plays a big role. This needs special work.

Artificial leather for touch emulation 15.04.2024

In a modern technology world where distance is becoming increasingly commonplace, maintaining connection and a sense of closeness is important. Recent developments in artificial skin by German scientists from Saarland University represent a new era in virtual interactions. German researchers from Saarland University have developed ultra-thin films that can transmit the sensation of touch over a distance. This cutting-edge technology provides new opportunities for virtual communication, especially for those who find themselves far from their loved ones. The ultra-thin films developed by the researchers, just 50 micrometers thick, can be integrated into textiles and worn like a second skin. These films act as sensors that recognize tactile signals from mom or dad, and as actuators that transmit these movements to the baby. Parents' touch to the fabric activates sensors that react to pressure and deform the ultra-thin film. This ... >>

The attractiveness of caring men 14.04.2024

The stereotype that women prefer "bad boys" has long been widespread. However, recent research conducted by British scientists from Monash University offers a new perspective on this issue. They looked at how women responded to men's emotional responsibility and willingness to help others. The study's findings could change our understanding of what makes men attractive to women. A study conducted by scientists from Monash University leads to new findings about men's attractiveness to women. In the experiment, women were shown photographs of men with brief stories about their behavior in various situations, including their reaction to an encounter with a homeless person. Some of the men ignored the homeless man, while others helped him, such as buying him food. A study found that men who showed empathy and kindness were more attractive to women compared to men who showed empathy and kindness. ... >>

The expression of a dog's muzzle depends on the attention of a person 14.01.2018

Scientists from the University of Portsmouth, UK, studied the facial expressions of dogs. It turned out that these animals do have certain facial expressions when interacting with people, for example, when they make big eyes and stick out their tongues.

Most mammalian species use facial expressions. Historically, facial expressions, or rather, muzzles, of an animal were considered inflexible and involuntary manifestations of emotional states, and not active attempts to communicate with others. However, scientists wondered how much canine facial expressions are influenced by exciting stimuli (such as food).

During the experiments, the person either paid attention to the dogs, or turned away, and either gave food or not. Observations showed that the facial expressions of animals were much more mobile when a person was attentive. However, food, however, being not a social, but an exciting stimulus, did not affect the behavior of the dogs.

From this, it was concluded that dogs are sensitive to human attention and this affects their facial expressions, suggesting that dog expressions are more of a potentially active attempt to communicate with others.

However, it remains unclear how consciously dogs take on a touching look, i.e. whether they are trying to manipulate us, but in any case, it became clear that facial expressions, so to speak, are not a by-product of happiness or excitement. It appears that man's best friend is indeed sensitive to human attention, and the well-known irresistible "puppy eyes" are often the result.
