Focus Description:

The “goats” and the assembled box are brought onto the stage. The box is placed on the trestles (Fig. 160). The illusionist addresses the audience: “No matter how much I convince you that the box is empty and that it has no secrets, you still won’t believe me. You will certainly suspect me of deception, so I suggest you make sure that the box is empty and has no secrets."

The illusionist and assistants slowly begin to disassemble the box piece by piece, turning the walls in all directions in front of the audience, moving the “goats,” etc. Then they reassemble the box and close it with a lid on top. (Disassembly and assembly of the box is possible thanks to the use of dismountable hinges.) “After I have proven to you that there is nothing in the box, I can show you the opposite,” says the illusionist. “To convince you that this box only seems empty, I'll open it again." The illusionist removes the lid from the box and folds down all four of its walls (Fig. 161).

The box is then reassembled and covered with a lid. “Now I will try to prove to you that your eyes are deceiving you.” The illusionist quickly removes the lid, lowers the front wall down, and the audience sees the assistant lying in the box (Fig. 162).

Props:

Two wooden "goats" on which to place the bottom of the box. The box is 180 cm long, 80 cm wide and 70 cm high.

This box can be disassembled into parts, that is, each of its walls must be made so that it can be removed from its hinges independently of the other walls. The height of the “goat” should be equal to the height of the box, that is, 70 cm. This is a necessary condition for the successful operation of the device.

To enhance the focus effect, you can direct a spotlight beam at the assistant, changing the colors of the glasses. To do this, the assistant must be in a white dress.

Focus secret:

The height of the “goat”, as we have already said, is the same as the height of the walls of the box. There is a ladder in the floor just behind the “goat”. At the moment when the illusionist proves for the last time that the box is empty and lowers the walls of the box that touch the floor, the assistant comes out of the ladder and attaches herself to the back wall of the box using hand and foot loops specially made for this purpose.

It must be remembered that the front wall of the box rises first, then both sides, and finally the back wall. On the back wall, an assistant climbs into the box. In Fig. 163 shows the box during a demonstration.

Special instructions for performing illusion and rehearsal. If the audience is below the stage floor, no special precautions need to be taken. If there are seats in the auditorium located above the stage, then the following must be taken into account: so that the audience cannot see the assistant on the back wall, it is necessary to put on the box lid at the same time as raising the back wall. This will more reliably hide the assistant from the eyes of the audience.

We have already said that with a certain dexterity and training, this illusion can be done without a hatch. To do this, the assistant is placed in the box before it is brought onto the stage. It is attached to the straps on the back wall of the box. When performing on stage, first fold back the back wall of the box with the assistant on it and at the same time remove the lid, and then lower both side walls and then the front wall. Assembling the box proceeds in the reverse order. When working without a hatch, it is difficult for assistants to carry the box with the assistant onto the stage. If this illusion is the first number in the program, then the box is placed on the stage before the curtain opens and the assistant is “charged” into it. Raising the back wall must be carefully rehearsed so that the audience does not notice that it is heavy. The wall must be raised and lowered without any visible tension.

There is another way to work without a hatch, we wrote about this, explaining the illusion "Inexhaustible Chest". An inconspicuous hole is made in the back curtain for the assistant, who, from behind the curtain, can easily crawl onto the stage to the back wall of the box and unnoticedly attach herself to the hinges on the back wall.

Even if there is a hatch on the stage, then using the above methods, you will perform the illusion with great effect. Performing several times, you can alternate the methods of performing this illusion, either using the hatch or the back curtain for it.

The assistant needs to rehearse several times how she will crawl across the stage and attach herself to the wall of the box. In general, the illusion should be carefully rehearsed in order to thoroughly master its individual parts, for example: 1) disassembling and assembling the box, 2) the order of raising the walls and the moment the assistant appears, 3) the assistant leaving the ladder, 4) attaching the assistant to the hinges on the back wall. When using a curtain, it is necessary to ensure that the assistant crawls through the curtain in such a way that even the one standing on the stage does not notice the vibration of the curtain.

When the individual parts of the illusion are firmly understood by everyone, then you can begin rehearsing the entire act as a whole, carefully practicing all the movements. Both in this illusion and in others, before rehearsals it is necessary to make the correct installation of the illusion on the stage, determine its most advantageous place on it in order to achieve the best visual impression of the illusion and not discover its secret.

Before the performance, you also need to install the necessary lighting and rehearse it, select musical accompaniment, and during rehearsals with light and music, check how all this is consistent with each other and “works” for the effect of the illusion.

Machine for thinning flowers in gardens 02.05.2024

In modern agriculture, technological progress is developing aimed at increasing the efficiency of plant care processes. The innovative Florix flower thinning machine was presented in Italy, designed to optimize the harvesting stage. This tool is equipped with mobile arms, allowing it to be easily adapted to the needs of the garden. The operator can adjust the speed of the thin wires by controlling them from the tractor cab using a joystick. This approach significantly increases the efficiency of the flower thinning process, providing the possibility of individual adjustment to the specific conditions of the garden, as well as the variety and type of fruit grown in it. After testing the Florix machine for two years on various types of fruit, the results were very encouraging. Farmers such as Filiberto Montanari, who has used a Florix machine for several years, have reported a significant reduction in the time and labor required to thin flowers. ... >>

Air trap for insects 01.05.2024

Agriculture is one of the key sectors of the economy, and pest control is an integral part of this process. A team of scientists from the Indian Council of Agricultural Research-Central Potato Research Institute (ICAR-CPRI), Shimla, has come up with an innovative solution to this problem - a wind-powered insect air trap. This device addresses the shortcomings of traditional pest control methods by providing real-time insect population data. The trap is powered entirely by wind energy, making it an environmentally friendly solution that requires no power. Its unique design allows monitoring of both harmful and beneficial insects, providing a complete overview of the population in any agricultural area. “By assessing target pests at the right time, we can take necessary measures to control both pests and diseases,” says Kapil ... >>

Bacteria improve plant growth and enrich the soil 12.02.2022

Cover crop plants, clover, grown in soils similar to those of Mars, have shown significant growth in the process of infection with symbiotic nitrogen-fixing bacteria. A researcher from the University of Colorado (USA) Franklin Harris, together with colleagues, presented the results of the study in the publication PLOS ONE.

As the Earth's population grows, researchers are exploring the possibility of farming Martian soil, or "regolith." Regolith lacks some key nutrients, including certain nitrogen-containing molecules that plants need to live. Therefore, agriculture on Mars will require a strategy to increase the amount of these nitrogen compounds in the regolith.

The scientists suggest that the bacteria could play a cost-effective role in increasing the fertility of Martian soils. On Earth, soil bacteria help convert or "fix" atmospheric nitrogen into molecules that plants need. Some of these microbes have a symbiotic relationship with crops, in which they fix nitrogen in nodules found on plant roots.

In order to study the possible role of symbiotic nitrogen-fixing bacteria in astro-agriculture, the researchers grew clover in artificial regolith, which is very similar to Martian. They infected some plants with the microbe Sinorhizobium meliloti, which is commonly found in clover root nodules on Earth. In previous studies, scientists have shown that clover can be grown in regolith, but inoculation with nitrogen fixers has not been studied.

The researchers found that clover inoculated with Sinorhizobium meliloti had 75% more root and shoot growth than normal clover. However, the regolith surrounding the inoculated plants did not show signs of elevated levels of NH4 (an important nitrogen-containing molecule for plants), compared to the regolith in which uninoculated clover grew.

This study suggests that the symbiotic microbes stimulated plant growth but did not lead to excess production of nitrogen compounds that could hypothetically be used by other crops growing nearby. The researchers also grew some clover in potting soil and noted some differences in symbiotic relationships compared to plants grown in regolith.

According to the results of scientific work, scientists have suggested the possibility that the symbiosis between plants and nitrogen-fixing bacteria can help agriculture on Mars.

"This study demonstrates that the nodule-forming bacteria Sinorhizobium meliloti can create nodules in Martian regolith, significantly enhancing the growth of clover (Melilotus officinalis) in greenhouse conditions. This work expands our understanding of how plant-microbial interactions will aid terraforming efforts." regolith on Mars," researchers at Colorado State University said.
