Focus Description:

Show the audience an empty envelope, put it on a stand and cover it with a handkerchief. Take a paper bag and drop a record into it. Crush the package - the record will disappear! Remove the handkerchief from the envelope and take out the just-vanished gramophone record from it.

Focus secret:

The gramophone record disappearing in a paper bag is rubber. It is made of 2mm rubber (from a rubber mat). The label on it can be drawn or placed on the front side separately, holding it with your fingers (Fig. a).

Such rubber easily retains the shape of the record, but just as easily loses it if it is crushed together with the package. The envelope, in which the "disappeared" gramophone record should appear, has blank walls and a valve. It has two overlapping pockets. Moreover, the first of them is empty: it is shown to the audience from the very beginning. In the second, far pocket, there is an ordinary gramophone record, but outwardly indistinguishable from a rubber one (Fig. b).

Having shown an empty envelope with a valve (its first compartment), put it on a stand and cover it with a handkerchief. Taking a rubber "phonograph record" from the table, as if it were an ordinary one, crush it together with the package. Putting the crumpled package aside, open the second compartment with a "charged" gramophone record and demonstrate its appearance.

Artificial leather for touch emulation 15.04.2024

In a modern technology world where distance is becoming increasingly commonplace, maintaining connection and a sense of closeness is important. Recent developments in artificial skin by German scientists from Saarland University represent a new era in virtual interactions. German researchers from Saarland University have developed ultra-thin films that can transmit the sensation of touch over a distance. This cutting-edge technology provides new opportunities for virtual communication, especially for those who find themselves far from their loved ones. The ultra-thin films developed by the researchers, just 50 micrometers thick, can be integrated into textiles and worn like a second skin. These films act as sensors that recognize tactile signals from mom or dad, and as actuators that transmit these movements to the baby. Parents' touch to the fabric activates sensors that react to pressure and deform the ultra-thin film. This ... >>

Petgugu Global cat litter 15.04.2024

Taking care of pets can often be a challenge, especially when it comes to keeping your home clean. A new interesting solution from the Petgugu Global startup has been presented, which will make life easier for cat owners and help them keep their home perfectly clean and tidy. Startup Petgugu Global has unveiled a unique cat toilet that can automatically flush feces, keeping your home clean and fresh. This innovative device is equipped with various smart sensors that monitor your pet's toilet activity and activate to automatically clean after use. The device connects to the sewer system and ensures efficient waste removal without the need for intervention from the owner. Additionally, the toilet has a large flushable storage capacity, making it ideal for multi-cat households. The Petgugu cat litter bowl is designed for use with water-soluble litters and offers a range of additional ... >>

The attractiveness of caring men 14.04.2024

The stereotype that women prefer "bad boys" has long been widespread. However, recent research conducted by British scientists from Monash University offers a new perspective on this issue. They looked at how women responded to men's emotional responsibility and willingness to help others. The study's findings could change our understanding of what makes men attractive to women. A study conducted by scientists from Monash University leads to new findings about men's attractiveness to women. In the experiment, women were shown photographs of men with brief stories about their behavior in various situations, including their reaction to an encounter with a homeless person. Some of the men ignored the homeless man, while others helped him, such as buying him food. A study found that men who showed empathy and kindness were more attractive to women compared to men who showed empathy and kindness. ... >>

A new chemical element with magnetic properties 07.06.2018

The discovery, made experimentally by researchers at the University of Minnesota, demonstrates that the chemical element ruthenium (Ru) is the fourth chemical element with unique magnetic properties at room temperature. Until recently, only three stable magnetic elements were known to people, iron (Fe), cobalt (Co), nickel (Ni) and, in part, gadolinium (Gd), which loses its magnetic properties at temperatures above 8 degrees Celsius. The discovery of a new magnetic material may lead to the development of new types of sensors, storage devices, information processing and a host of other electronic and electromechanical devices.

This discovery is based on some theoretical predictions, for the implementation of which scientists from Minnesota have developed a method of "growing" ruthenium crystals with a quadrangular lattice shape, and not the hexagonal one that this element has in its natural form. And it is this rectangular form of ruthenium, formed as a thin film, that exhibits pronounced ferromagnetic properties at room temperature.

The researchers believe that with their discovery they opened the door to the direction of fundamental research on the magnetic properties of ruthenium. Ruthenium is particularly interesting because it is chemically inert, it is very resistant to oxidation. In addition, its magnetic properties must have high thermal stability, which makes this material a suitable candidate for use in the next generation of magnetic recording devices. And right now, scientists are researching this unique property of ruthenium.

In addition to traditional technologies that use the magnetic properties of materials, the emergence of a new magnetic material can play an important role in the further development of a number of new areas, such as spintronics. This will be favored by the fact that the technologies for growing thin films and creating nanostructures have already reached a level that allows the production of materials with unique properties that the same materials of natural origin do not possess.
