EFFECTIVE FOCUSES AND THEIR CLUES Playing card manipulation. Tips for a magician Directory / Spectacular tricks and their clues Tricks with cards are always a great success with the audience. These tricks are convenient because they can be shown everywhere: at a family party at the table, among friends, on a camping trip. The props are portable - it's a single deck of cards that fits easily in your pocket. There are several thousand different tricks with cards, sometimes so simple that they do not require any preparation, however, these tricks are not as effective as those that require training, experience and skill in manipulation to perform. For an amateur who has mastered the manipulation of coins and balls, it is much easier to master the manipulation of cards, since his hands will already acquire the necessary dexterity. To demonstrate tricks, you need to purchase a deck of "satin" cards in fifty-two sheets with rounded edges (they are convenient for performing). Card manipulations are very useful, they help to improve hand technique. This is one of the most difficult, but also the most interesting sections of illusion art. Therefore, the amateur should carefully study it, achieving high skill. It goes without saying that before you master the technique of manipulating cards, it is useless for you to study any tricks with them. For manipulation, a deck of thirty-two cards (selected from fifty-two) is usually taken. Such a deck is easier to hold in the hand, but for greater effect it is necessary to learn how to easily manipulate all fifty cards. Speaking of card manipulations, it must be emphasized that they, like all others, should be performed without looking at the hands. All exercises are performed without fail in front of a mirror, so it is more convenient to follow all movements. There are thirty basic manipulations, each of which has many options. There is no need to study them, so here we give a few, from which each performer can choose the most suitable ones. Volt is the basis of all card tricks. Its purpose is to change the relative position of the upper and lower parts of the deck (in the language of professionals, this technique is called "transposition" or "volt"). Volts exist for both one hand and two. Classical volt (performed with both hands). Take the deck with a speck up in your left hand, as is usually done when dealing cards, with the thumb on the deck on the left, and the rest on the right. Place the upper knuckle of the little finger on the cards that are now at the bottom of the deck and which should be moved up, and the remaining three fingers on the top cards (Fig. 21).
Bring your right hand to your left and cover the deck with it. Grab the bottom half of the deck with your right hand along the upper edge with your index finger, and with the bottom half with your thumb. Press the lower half of the deck with the index finger of the right hand to the base of the thumb of the left hand so that both halves lie, as shown in fig. 22.
Spreading the fingers of your left hand, move the upper half of the deck to the right, simultaneously lifting the outer edge of the lower half with your right hand and pushing both halves of the deck in opposite directions until the edges of both halves are completely apart. If you then close the palm of your left hand, both halves of the deck will again fold together, but only by exchanging places (Fig. 23). Volt done!
Exercises in this Volta should be started with slow movements, taking care only of the purity and impeccability of execution. At first, this manipulation will seem difficult and complicated, but gradually the hands will acquire skill, the movements will merge into one, as it were, and you will exchange places of both halves of the deck with such speed and dexterity, as if they were passing through one another. The movement of the cards during the volt is imperceptible to the audience, since all movements (instant squeezing and raising hands) are made as if automatically and take a fraction of a second in time. You need to get used to doing the volt mechanically, completely without looking at your hands. During the performance, you can talk to the audience to divert their attention from your hands. Sometimes it is necessary to fold both halves of the deck (face to face). To do this, the upper part of the deck is turned over so that the suit lies face down at the moment when both moved halves are connected again. If the performer has mastered the technique of the volt, then this small change will not seem difficult to him. Volt can be done in thirty-six different ways. The one just described by us is the most successful of all and is called the "classical" volt. Volt with one hand is also one of the best. The name itself suggests that it is made with only one hand. As in the previous Volta, they take the cards in the left hand and support them with the middle, ring and thumb (Fig. 24).
The little finger divides the deck along the bottom edge into two halves, and the index finger is extended under the deck. Holding the cards in this way, let the bottom half of the deck fall freely into the palm of your hand, loosening the pressure of your thumb on the cards for this (Fig. 25).
Then the index finger lifts the outer side of the lower part of the deck to the position indicated in fig. 26.
After that, the middle and ring fingers, easing the pressure on the cards, allow the upper part of the deck (indicated by the number 1 in the figure) to slide under the lower part (number 2). The index finger is extended again, aligning the position of both sides of the deck. Volt done! When volting with one hand, it is most convenient to disguise it with a sharp movement of the hand performing the manipulation and a slight gesture of the other hand. Despite the apparent complexity and difficulty of movements, this volt is performed very quickly in practice. With a small deck of cards, each manipulator makes up to 50 to 60 volts per minute. It goes without saying that only with special training can such speed of execution be achieved. With conventional cards, the manipulation is somewhat slower, about 45 volts per minute. Such a volt should always be accompanied by a slight shaking of the hand holding the deck. Without this gesture - a distraction - even with the indicated speed of execution, your maneuver will be noticeable to the audience. The movement accompanying the Volt is performed as follows: when the top half of the deck of cards falls on the palm, as shown in fig. 26, the hand makes a slight downward movement; the next moment (fig. 27) the hand goes up and then to the performer, both movements should merge into one.
Of these two most successful options, you yourself can choose the one that you like. The description of other options can only confuse the novice illusionist with their technical difficulties.
