Sleep patterns change significantly with age

British scientists managed to collect data on the sleep patterns of 730 people from 187 countries in an unusual way: using the mobile game Sea Hero Quest.

The game itself was designed to study Alzheimer's disease and assess differences in the spatial abilities of people from different parts of the world, but at the same time, players also answered other questions about themselves, including reporting age and daily sleep time.

It turned out that players sleep an average of 7,01 hours a day, while women sleep an average of 7,5 minutes longer than men. Eastern European countries such as Albania, Slovakia, Romania and the Czech Republic slept the most, half an hour longer than the global average, while Southeast Asian countries including the Philippines, Malaysia and Indonesia slept the least.

Despite the difference in different parts of the world, scientists have identified a general dynamics of sleep duration, which does not depend on gender, place of residence, or level of education: the youngest participants in the experiment, under the age of 20, slept the longest, by the age of 30, sleep duration gradually decreased, stabilized from 30 to 50 years, and after 50 increased again. The researchers suggest that this dynamic reflects the social roles of people for whom the period from 20 to 50 years is the time of the most active work and family life.

As for the game's basic goal of detecting differences in navigational ability, despite varying sleep durations, the researchers found no difference between younger participants and middle-aged players. But in people older than 54 years, these abilities declined sharply.

Not all superconductivity can be destroyed by a magnetic field.

The magnetic field is pushed out of the superconductor - the corresponding kind of magnetic levitation is based on this phenomenon. However, a strong field penetrates the superconductor, creating eddy currents in it, the so-called Abrikosov vortices, for the discovery of which the former Soviet scientist who moved to the United States received the Nobel Prize in 2003. Vortices destroy electron pairs, and the magnetic field is the second limit to the use of superconducting materials; the first is too much current.

However, time passes, and new superconductors appear. In particular, superconductivity was found in molybdenum disulfide quite recently: in 2012, the Japanese achieved the effect on a thin layer of this substance, and in March 2015, the Chinese did it on a bulk sample, but at high pressure, the transition temperature turned out to be slightly more than 11K. Usually, MoS2 is used as a solid lubricant component: like graphite, it is easily separated into monatomic layers. It was on such a two-dimensional object that an international group of researchers conducted experiments in Nijmegen. Why there? But because the Nijmegen High Magnetic Field Laboratory has unique facilities with extremely strong magnets; it was here in the 90s that Andrey Geim, the future Nobel laureate for the discovery of graphene, carried out the famous frog levitation due to the diamagnetism inherent in all living beings.

The most powerful field, 37,5 Tesla, was applied to a plate of disulfide in a superconducting state. The superconductivity in the sample did not disappear. Moreover, there is an opinion that even one kilotesla is unimportant to him. It is hardly possible to check this - we still do not know how to create such strong fields. In any case, now it is necessary to explain what kind of force keeps electron pairs from the destructive action of a strong field. It is possible that the explanations will help to find fundamentally new materials.
