Focus Description:

Behind the barrier, at some distance from it, there is a curtain. Four bright lamps burn on its sides, the light from which, reflected by reflectors, falls on the audience. The curtain slowly opens and the audience sees: in the middle of the small stage hangs a small swing with a board painted white. The swing is suspended on nickel-plated chains. Below, under the swing, to prove that there is nothing underneath, hangs, swinging on a nickel-plated chain, a small dagger. On the board is a bust of a woman. She nods and smiles welcomingly at the audience. She holds a fan in her hands, with which she occasionally fans herself, and with her other hand she holds on to the chain of the swing (Fig. 211).

The performer invites the audience to ask questions, which the woman willingly answers. Wanting to prove that the swing is hanging in the air, the illusionist moves his hand under it and in doing so touches the dagger, which begins to sway. The illusionist tells the woman that the audience wants to see if she is alive. In response to this, the woman grabs the chains with both hands and, swaying slightly, rises a little. Viewers can clearly see that her body ends at her waist. The performer again quickly moves his hand along the swing board and under the performer. A woman has no torso!

The curtain is slowly closing.

Focus secret:

The woman is in a horizontal position, lying on a large board suspended from the ceiling by ropes covered with black velvet. The board also comes with a black velvet cover. The woman is wearing a long black velvet robe. The woman's bust is draped in light-colored fabric. The shoulder straps discreetly attach a mannequin chest to the waist. This mannequin is also draped with fabric matching the color of the bust's drapery in such a way that from the outside it seems that the mannequin is part of a living person.

The assistant’s torso and legs are completely invisible to the audience, because the entire space of the stage is also draped in black velvet, against which the black velvet robe and large board are lost.

In Fig. 212 you can clearly see how the woman lies and how the mannequin props her up, merging with the top of her body.

The nickel-plated chains and white swing board, as well as the light tones of the bodice, stand out against the black velvet. The light from the lamps, falling only on the performer’s head and upper body, darkens the velvet. The light from the lamps, reflected by reflectors into the auditorium, completely hides the woman’s torso. It seems to everyone that she is truly “incorporeal” and fits freely on a small white board of a swing.

Air trap for insects 01.05.2024

Agriculture is one of the key sectors of the economy, and pest control is an integral part of this process. A team of scientists from the Indian Council of Agricultural Research-Central Potato Research Institute (ICAR-CPRI), Shimla, has come up with an innovative solution to this problem - a wind-powered insect air trap. This device addresses the shortcomings of traditional pest control methods by providing real-time insect population data. The trap is powered entirely by wind energy, making it an environmentally friendly solution that requires no power. Its unique design allows monitoring of both harmful and beneficial insects, providing a complete overview of the population in any agricultural area. “By assessing target pests at the right time, we can take necessary measures to control both pests and diseases,” says Kapil ... >>

The threat of space debris to the Earth's magnetic field 01.05.2024

More and more often we hear about an increase in the amount of space debris surrounding our planet. However, it is not only active satellites and spacecraft that contribute to this problem, but also debris from old missions. The growing number of satellites launched by companies like SpaceX creates not only opportunities for the development of the Internet, but also serious threats to space security. Experts are now turning their attention to the potential implications for the Earth's magnetic field. Dr. Jonathan McDowell of the Harvard-Smithsonian Center for Astrophysics emphasizes that companies are rapidly deploying satellite constellations, and the number of satellites could grow to 100 in the next decade. The rapid development of these cosmic armadas of satellites can lead to contamination of the Earth's plasma environment with dangerous debris and a threat to the stability of the magnetosphere. Metal debris from used rockets can disrupt the ionosphere and magnetosphere. Both of these systems play a key role in protecting the atmosphere and maintaining ... >>

Solidification of bulk substances 30.04.2024

There are quite a few mysteries in the world of science, and one of them is the strange behavior of bulk materials. They may behave like a solid but suddenly turn into a flowing liquid. This phenomenon has attracted the attention of many researchers, and we may finally be getting closer to solving this mystery. Imagine sand in an hourglass. It usually flows freely, but in some cases its particles begin to get stuck, turning from a liquid to a solid. This transition has important implications for many areas, from drug production to construction. Researchers from the USA have attempted to describe this phenomenon and come closer to understanding it. In the study, the scientists conducted simulations in the laboratory using data from bags of polystyrene beads. They found that the vibrations within these sets had specific frequencies, meaning that only certain types of vibrations could travel through the material. Received ... >>

Smoke prevents the rain 18.05.2000

After studying data from a special satellite that measures the amount of clouds and precipitation in the Earth's tropical zone, Israeli geophysicist Daniel Rosenfeld came to the conclusion that smoke interferes with the formation of rain.

After severe forest fires in Indonesia in the spring of 1998, rainfall decreased in the area. The fact is that the rain begins when small droplets in the cloud merge into larger ones, which can no longer stay in the air and begin to fall. To do this, the droplets must be larger than 25-28 microns in diameter. However, smoke is made up of tiny soot particles, providing a convenient place for moisture to condense.

Droplets much smaller than necessary to start coalescence condense around the smoke particles and do not tend to coalesce. Rosenfeld believes that polluted city air also interferes with the formation of large water droplets in clouds.
