Altimeter - a device for measuring altitude above sea level. With altitude, atmospheric pressure decreases, and the altimeter records its change. Knowing the altitude of your own location can be very useful when orienting in the mountains in poor visibility conditions. For example, when you climb in dense fog and finally reach the top, can you be completely sure that you climbed the exact peak that was the goal of your expedition, and not some intermediate one? The altimeter will give you an accurate answer.

The cost of a correct answer is especially high if there is only one safe direction down the mountain, which will need to be maintained by compass. If you mistakenly take the desired course from the wrong mountain, serious troubles may await you ahead.

In addition, it is possible that during the descent you will need to deviate from the course to go around a cliff or avoid a steep cliff. In poor visibility conditions, the altimeter will tell you when it's time to change course.

Since atmospheric pressure also depends on the meteorological situation, the altimeter readings must be periodically checked against known altitude marks, for example, while being at sea level or on a hill, the exact height of which is indicated on the map.

When using the altimeter, consider weather conditions. In stormy weather, when atmospheric pressure changes quite quickly, you need to adjust the device readings as often as possible, since within an hour or two after the next adjustment, its readings may not correspond to the altitude of the area where you are. In good, stable weather in anticyclonic conditions, when the atmospheric pressure is fairly constant, the altimeter works more reliably and does not need to be checked frequently.

Not so long ago, altimeters were massive and expensive instruments that were used only by topographers and participants in serious high-mountain expeditions. In recent years, lightweight wrist altimeters have appeared on the market and are offered to consumers at very reasonable prices. Many devices are multifunctional and can serve, for example, as a barometer and an electronic compass.

The very ability of an altimeter to estimate atmospheric pressure determines the possibility of its use as a barometer. When at a constant altitude, such as at a base camp or on a boat, note changes in gauge readings caused by weather conditions and use the resulting data to forecast the weather.

Changes in readings overnight can indicate an upcoming change in weather. If your camp miraculously rises to the skies overnight, it means that the atmospheric pressure has dropped, which, as a rule, portends bad weather. An increase in pressure, indicated by a decrease in instrument readings, often indicates an imminent improvement in the weather.

Energy from space for Starship 08.05.2024

Producing solar energy in space is becoming more feasible with the advent of new technologies and the development of space programs. The head of the startup Virtus Solis shared his vision of using SpaceX's Starship to create orbital power plants capable of powering the Earth. Startup Virtus Solis has unveiled an ambitious project to create orbital power plants using SpaceX's Starship. This idea could significantly change the field of solar energy production, making it more accessible and cheaper. The core of the startup's plan is to reduce the cost of launching satellites into space using Starship. This technological breakthrough is expected to make solar energy production in space more competitive with traditional energy sources. Virtual Solis plans to build large photovoltaic panels in orbit, using Starship to deliver the necessary equipment. However, one of the key challenges ... >>

New method for creating powerful batteries 08.05.2024

With the development of technology and the expanding use of electronics, the issue of creating efficient and safe energy sources is becoming increasingly urgent. Researchers at the University of Queensland have unveiled a new approach to creating high-power zinc-based batteries that could change the landscape of the energy industry. One of the main problems with traditional water-based rechargeable batteries was their low voltage, which limited their use in modern devices. But thanks to a new method developed by scientists, this drawback has been successfully overcome. As part of their research, scientists turned to a special organic compound - catechol. It turned out to be an important component that can improve battery stability and increase its efficiency. This approach has led to a significant increase in the voltage of zinc-ion batteries, making them more competitive. According to scientists, such batteries have several advantages. They have b ... >>

Alcohol content of warm beer 07.05.2024

Beer, as one of the most common alcoholic drinks, has its own unique taste, which can change depending on the temperature of consumption. A new study by an international team of scientists has found that beer temperature has a significant impact on the perception of alcoholic taste. The study, led by materials scientist Lei Jiang, found that at different temperatures, ethanol and water molecules form different types of clusters, which affects the perception of alcoholic taste. At low temperatures, more pyramid-like clusters form, which reduces the pungency of the "ethanol" taste and makes the drink taste less alcoholic. On the contrary, as the temperature increases, the clusters become more chain-like, resulting in a more pronounced alcoholic taste. This explains why the taste of some alcoholic drinks, such as baijiu, can change depending on temperature. The data obtained opens up new prospects for beverage manufacturers, ... >>

Coffee in test tubes 14.09.2021

Finnish scientists have grown coffee in a test tube. As a result, a light-colored biomass was obtained. It was dried, fried to a dark brown shade and got something like coffee grounds, from which you can brew a drink. It is reported by the Technical Research Center of Finland.

In the process of preparing the drink, scientists cultivated plant cells by placing them in a special solution. After that, they got the biomass, which they dried and roasted, after which it became like coffee grounds.

The process is quite adjustable and you can vary the aromas and saturation of such a drink.

Lab coffee is an experimental food. In Europe, such products must first be recognized as food before they can be sold.

According to the researchers, they will be able to increase production and get permission to sell from regulators in four years.

Food market experts note that coffee will continue to rise in price, and therefore alternative options for its production can be useful to humanity.
