Focus Description:

Uniformists carry a large travel chest into the arena and place it in the middle of the arena. Above the chest hangs a large quadrangular tent made of dense dark material (Fig. 189). The illusionist invites three spectators and invites them to inspect the chest. They don't find anything suspicious in him. The assistant takes out a large bag made of thick canvas and gives it to one of the spectators for inspection.

The assistant puts the bag in the arena, the performer stands on it, and the bag is lifted up, covering the magician with his head. The bag is tied up and the audience is invited to seal the ties with a wax seal to a cardboard plate, on which one of them writes his last name. Then the assistants pick up the bag with the illusionist and put it in the chest, close the lid, lock it with two locks and tie it with a rope. The spectators look again at how everything is tied and locked. After the examination, they move a little to the side, and the assistant stands near the chest. From above, the tent is lowered very quickly, closing the chest and assistant for a few seconds.

A girl's voice is heard: "One! Two!", And immediately "Three!" says the illusionist. The tent is quickly raised. A performer is standing near the chest. Spectators check the integrity of the ropes and locks. The assistants untie the chest, from which they lift a bag with a person inside it. Spectators are offered to verify the signature and the integrity of the seal. Then the bag is untied, an assistant comes out of it. The chest and bag, after inspection by the audience, are carried backstage.

Focus secret:

The secret of the illusion has two parts: getting out of the chest and getting out of the bag.

The chest (approximate dimensions) is 120 cm long, 70 cm wide and 80 cm high, made of ten-millimeter plywood, covered inside with a thin, durable cloth, and outside with a strong canvas; primed and painted with oil paint. Both on top and inside the chest is upholstered with thin strip iron 20 mm wide. Above and below, for strength, beech slats 30 mm wide and 10 mm thick are laid. Reiki is attached to the chest with wallpaper nails with large hats. The secret of the chest is exactly the same as in the described illusion"zipper box", with the only difference that here, in this case, the removable shield A (Fig. 190) instead of wooden slats has iron strips on the sides, which are attached with small screws.

On fig. 190, B, the shield is shown separately. Here you can clearly see the latches 3 attached to the screws Ш; the latches can be rotated so that they can tightly lock the shield A in the chest or unlock it and remove the planks P from the slots in the bottom of the chest. With the help of planks P, the shield A precisely falls into place, and the bottom of the shield is firmly held in the nests G, which are screwed into the bottom of the chest in the right places. Screwdriver 2 rotate screw Ш and together with them latches 3.

On fig. 190, C shows the shield in section along the line a - b. The secret of the bag is described in detail by us in the illusion "The Bag to Disappear" on page 249.

The display of the number is as follows. Everything goes according to the description. As soon as the illusionist is in the bag and when he is put into the chest and closed with a lid, he immediately stretches the side seam of the bag, carefully gets out and folds the bag so that the assistant can easily get into it. Then the illusionist sits across the chest, resting his knees on the shield A. He lights the electric lamp of the flashlight and opens the latches by its light, continuing to hold the shield with his knees so that the audience could not accidentally squeeze it inside, tying the chest with a rope.

As soon as the chest is tied and the audience moves aside, the assistant gives the agreed signal, according to which the tent is lowered, and the performer prepares to leave the chest. At the right moment, the girl presses her knee on the shield A and starts counting. At this time, the illusionist, quickly putting aside the shield, while counting "one!" crawls out of the chest, and the assistant also quickly climbs in there, barely having time to say "two!". She immediately puts the shield in place, presses it against the wall of the chest, lights a flashlight and locks the shield on the latch 3; then he gets into the bag and straightens it, while the magician at this time says "three!" and gives the signal to raise the tent.

The sides of the tent are 150 cm each, and the height is 200 cm. The rope is taken so long that it can be freely tied around the chest once in a circle along the length and twice across.

In the chest, just in case, you must have at least two exits: one on both long sides.

When performed quickly and skillfully, this trick makes a very big impression on the audience.

Ammonia from beer and boron 19.09.2020

Employees at the University of Würzburg have learned how to convert atmospheric nitrogen into ammonium chloride using beer and a compound containing boron. Industrially significant ammonia can then be isolated from this salt.

Today, ammonia and its salts are used to produce vast quantities of fertilizers and synthetic compounds for other industries. It is most convenient to create this gas from nitrogen contained in the atmosphere, because its volume fraction in the air is more than 78%. Today, the Haber process is used for this - a direct combination of hydrogen and nitrogen using a special catalyst. However, this process is associated with heating to significant temperatures and the creation of high pressure.

German chemists have found a way to reduce the cost of producing this gas. Two years ago, this group of scientists came up with a method for the synthesis of ammonia, in which the role of a catalyst - a substance that accelerates a chemical reaction - is performed by a light organic molecule with boron atoms. But then the chemists managed to carry out only half of the reaction: nitrogen was restored, but ammonia had not yet been obtained.

In the new study, scientists first accidentally added water to the reaction mixture and it turned out that the reaction in the system moved one step closer to the target product. Then the scientists decided to test how stable the process is to the presence of impurities. They added local Wurzburger Hofbrau beer to the system instead of water. It turned out that in such a medium the reaction proceeds to the target product.

This shows that the process invented by the researchers is resistant to the action of other compounds in solution and unpretentious in terms of the reaction medium. Although scientists have already managed to obtain active forms of ammonium ions and carry out more than half of the process, they have yet to find a way to convert these forms into the final product - ammonia.
