Synthetic brain

According to scientists at the University of California, the creation of a "synthetic brain" is not far off. The first important step towards this has been taken. The fact that a group of scientists began to create a "synthetic brain" was announced in 2012. Its members intend to make a thinking machine with physical intelligence.

In the process of research, experts have found that a network of closely spaced copper columns can grow a nanowire if it is specially treated with silver nitrate.

The wires diverge, as if in random directions. However, they are very similar to the crossing neurons of the brain. At the same time, nanowires organize themselves. At the atomic level, they resemble synapses. These are the points at which two neurons can send signals to one another. Such a reaction is shown by an MRI of the brain when the preservation of memories is displayed there.

When an electrical signal was sent through the resulting network, the nanowires demonstrated an independent organization of information in the likeness of the human brain. That is, when they are networked, they begin to communicate with each other. In a certain sense, this system has already become "alive", showing the interaction.

Silicon microcircuits are used in electronic digital watches, and their very pulsating "heart" - a quartz crystal - is silicon dioxide.

And recently, the well-known Swiss company "Patek Philippe" has found the use of silicon in high-class mechanical watches. Using the photolithography method, which is used in the manufacture of microcircuits, Swiss watchmakers cut out the thinnest spiral from a silicon plate with a thickness of just over a tenth of a millimeter. She replaced the steel hair of the balance in the watches of the latest model.

Unlike steel, silicon is non-magnetic, so the new watch is not afraid of magnetic fields. The material is also insensitive to temperature changes. But the main thing is that the silicon spiral contracts and expands much more evenly than the steel one, which made it possible to increase the accuracy of the stroke.

The first batch of dozens of silicon watches priced at $20 went on sale in Basel in the spring of 2006.
