EFFECTIVE FOCUSES AND THEIR CLUES Sleep in the air. Focus Secret Directory / Spectacular tricks and their clues Focus Description: A platform stand with low legs, a small bench and two sticks are brought onto the stage. The illusionist plunges the assistant into a deep "hypnotic sleep" with several passes. The assistant puts the sleeping girl on the bench, which he previously placed on the platform. On the sides of the "sleeping" two sticks are stuck into the platform: on the right and on the left side. The performer, approaching the assistant, raises her right hand and puts her elbow on the upper end of the right support. He does the same with his left hand (Fig. 174, A). Then the assistant takes out a bench from under the girl's feet, and she hangs in the air, leaning her elbows on sticks (Fig. 174, B). The illusionist removes the stick from under his left hand, and the assistant hangs, leaning on the stick with one right hand (Fig. 174, B).
After making a few more passes, the performer takes both legs of the assistant up 45 degrees (Fig. 174, D), and she remains in this position, then she is raised 90 degrees, and the girl continues to sleep in the air, lying parallel to the platform and slightly leaning on her elbow right hand on the stand (Fig. 174, D). Then everything happens in reverse order. When the assistant is placed on the carpet, she wakes up and goes backstage. The illusion can be varied. For example, it is good to disguise a stick stand in beautiful flower vases. Then the assistant "sleeps" in the air, leaning slightly with her elbow on the fragile delicate petals. You can apply here and mnemonics. Focus secret: The platform should be of such size that it cannot turn over when the assistant's body is loaded on it at the moment when it is parallel to the platform and presses with all its weight on one point. The platform has two nests for sticks. One support, which is placed under the left hand, is the most common and can be given for inspection, but we do not recommend doing this, as viewers may have suspicions about another support. The second stick is made of strong steel: it must withstand a large load. If the illusionist himself cannot calculate what section the stand should be, you need to ask a specialist engineer to do this. An excessively thick stick will produce an unpleasant impression, while a thin one will bend and even break. When calculating the cross section, you should always make a tolerance of 25 percent, which will insure the performer against any accidents. The lower end of the support rod is inserted into a metal socket attached to the platform. The stand should fit snugly into it without unnecessary friction, without play, and hold firmly there. It is good to paste over the stand-rod with single-layer thin plywood. Puttied and polished, it will look like a solid wooden stick. At the upper end of the metal rod A (Fig. 175) a small recess B of 4-5 cm was made, into which the pin C, located on the strip E of the "corset", should easily enter. It is shown in fig. 176. This device is the main secret of the illusion.
The assistant puts on a corset under the costume before going on stage. An iron, wide, leather-lined rim L wraps around the waist and ends with a belt M. An iron rod E is welded to the middle of the rim L, which starts under the arm of the right hand and ends near the thigh. A knee P is attached to the rod on a hinge, which also moves along the leg. It ends with a belt loop O, wrapping around the leg at the calf, supporting the entire system and allowing the leg to bend when walking.
A wide strip H extends upward from the back of the rim L. It is fastened to another belt attached in front of the rim L. The strip H is put on over the left shoulder. It serves as a kind of "tightening", holding the entire corset. From the back of the same rim L, a belt loop M passes down, which is connected by a belt to the front of the rim. To the front of the rod E1, passing along the right side, just under the armpit, a short iron strip E is attached; it is equipped with a belt loop G and ends with a wheel with three teeth 3. The wheel enters the grooves of the hinge rod E1. The notch of the teeth 3 corresponds exactly to the brake pin D, which lies parallel to the rod E1 and moves in the pillars C welded to the rod. The peg in the normal position is tightly pressed against the teeth of the wheel by the spring G, but it can be pulled back if the handle I is pressed down. The opposite end of the plate E has a pin C welded from below, which freely, but without play, enters the recess B of the support A. All hinged parts of the corset are movable to such an extent that with the help of rod E and hinge 3 it is easy to "force" the "sleeping" assistant to describe an arc of 90 degrees in the air (see Fig. 174, C and D). The drawing of the corset worn by the assistant (Fig. 177) is so clear that more detailed explanations are unnecessary here.
In the right sleeve of the girl's dress, a hole is cut out into which pin B is passed. At the right time, it is discreetly inserted into hole B of rod A. The corset is quite comfortable, so the assistant can stay in the air for a long time without much stress. Author: Vadimov A.A.
