40Gbps wireless data transfer

31.05.2013

Scientists from the German Fraunhofer Institute and the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology have set a new world record for wireless data transfer speeds. The researchers were able to establish a wireless connection at a distance of one kilometer with a data transfer rate of 40 Gb / s.

The experiment used a radio channel at a frequency of 240 GHz. The technology was named Millilink. In comparison, the most advanced 802.11ad WiFi technology (WiGig) provides speeds of about 7 Gbps at a distance of much less than a kilometer.

Theoretically, the potential of Millilink technology is much higher. In theory, a data transfer rate of 100 Gb / s and even more is already achievable. The technology will definitely find its application when it is brought to mind. For example, to provide broadband Internet access in rural areas or ultra-fast last mile where there is no fiber optic link.

Alcohol content of warm beer 07.05.2024

Beer, as one of the most common alcoholic drinks, has its own unique taste, which can change depending on the temperature of consumption. A new study by an international team of scientists has found that beer temperature has a significant impact on the perception of alcoholic taste. The study, led by materials scientist Lei Jiang, found that at different temperatures, ethanol and water molecules form different types of clusters, which affects the perception of alcoholic taste. At low temperatures, more pyramid-like clusters form, which reduces the pungency of the "ethanol" taste and makes the drink taste less alcoholic. On the contrary, as the temperature increases, the clusters become more chain-like, resulting in a more pronounced alcoholic taste. This explains why the taste of some alcoholic drinks, such as baijiu, can change depending on temperature. The data obtained opens up new prospects for beverage manufacturers, ... >>

Major risk factor for gambling addiction 07.05.2024

Computer games are becoming an increasingly popular form of entertainment among teenagers, but the associated risk of gaming addiction remains a significant problem. American scientists conducted a study to determine the main factors contributing to this addiction and offer recommendations for its prevention. Over the course of six years, 385 teenagers were followed to find out what factors may predispose them to gambling addiction. The results showed that 90% of study participants were not at risk of addiction, while 10% became gambling addicts. It turned out that the key factor in the onset of gambling addiction is a low level of prosocial behavior. Teenagers with a low level of prosocial behavior do not show interest in the help and support of others, which can lead to a loss of contact with the real world and a deepening dependence on virtual reality offered by computer games. Based on these results, scientists ... >>

Traffic noise delays the growth of chicks 06.05.2024

The sounds that surround us in modern cities are becoming increasingly piercing. However, few people think about how this noise affects the animal world, especially such delicate creatures as chicks that have not yet hatched from their eggs. Recent research is shedding light on this issue, indicating serious consequences for their development and survival. Scientists have found that exposure of zebra diamondback chicks to traffic noise can cause serious disruption to their development. Experiments have shown that noise pollution can significantly delay their hatching, and those chicks that do emerge face a number of health-promoting problems. The researchers also found that the negative effects of noise pollution extend into the adult birds. Reduced chances of reproduction and decreased fertility indicate the long-term effects that traffic noise has on wildlife. The study results highlight the need ... >>

A New Way to Control and Manipulate Optical Signals 05.05.2024

The modern world of science and technology is developing rapidly, and every day new methods and technologies appear that open up new prospects for us in various fields. One such innovation is the development by German scientists of a new way to control optical signals, which could lead to significant progress in the field of photonics. Recent research has allowed German scientists to create a tunable waveplate inside a fused silica waveguide. This method, based on the use of a liquid crystal layer, allows one to effectively change the polarization of light passing through a waveguide. This technological breakthrough opens up new prospects for the development of compact and efficient photonic devices capable of processing large volumes of data. The electro-optical control of polarization provided by the new method could provide the basis for a new class of integrated photonic devices. This opens up great opportunities for ... >>

Hybrid crossover BMW Concept XM 02.12.2021

The BMW M division of the well-known German automaker has unveiled the BMW Concept XM plug-in hybrid concept, which will turn into a serial BMW XM crossover next year. The Germans noted that this will be the first independent model of the BMW M brand after the BMW M1 sports car and it will have no analogues in the main BMW lineup.

The model received a hybrid propulsion system consisting of a V8 gasoline engine and an electric motor, which together produce 550 kW / 750 hp. and 1000 Nm of torque. Exclusively on electric traction, the crossover will be able to drive up to 80 km, so it can be used without problems in green areas.

The BMW Concept XM crossover has received a new design with a two-tone paint job, the features of which will be used by the brand's future flagship models. At the front, the car retains its characteristic nostrils, while the M-style double louvre grille forms an almost octagonal contour, while contour lighting creates a special visual effect that is clearly visible at night. The typical BMW M bonnet shape follows the lines of the radiator grille, while the air intakes are stylistically inspired by the LED elements on the roof. The triangular sections on the sides of the bumper also contain vertical air ducts, indicating the sporty character of the model.

Seen from the side, the combination of the long bonnet and sloping roofline creates a classic two-box profile, while the glazing line narrows towards the rear, enhancing the vehicle's visual dynamism. The charging port cover behind the front left wheel indicates the presence of an M Hybrid with external charging capability. The traditional black cladding above the wheels and side sills of the BMW X models creates a clear lower contour and visually lifts the body off the road.

Behind, the attention is drawn to the rear glass of complex shape and branded L-shaped lights in a darkened design. Four tailpipes of the exhaust system are integrated into the bumper, while a vertical arrangement and a hexagonal shape of the tailpipes were chosen. In the interior, the division of the driver's seat with a tilted center console and the curved BMW Curved Display, as well as the M Lounge passenger space with additional comfort and an embossed illuminated ceiling, are interesting.
