Focus Description:
The illusionist shows his hands: they are empty. A slight wave of the right hand - and a lit cigarette appears in it. The performer takes a few puffs and throws a cigarette into a transparent ashtray on the table. Following this, a second cigarette appears in his hand, which he takes into his mouth, then a third. This is repeated many times. The ashtray is filled with burning cigarettes (Fig. 123). Finishing the number, the performer again shows that his hands are empty.

Cassette for cigarettes with a device for palming.
Focus secret:
The secret of the trick is that the magician has a special cassette (Fig. 124). It is designed in such a way that six lighted cigarettes are loaded into it. The cassette is palmed in his hand, and as needed, the performer takes out cigarettes from it.
The device of the cassette is very simple. A wavy plate of the desired size is made of tin; each recess should easily fit a cigarette. All six cigarettes are pressed against the plate by a spring. Any of them can be freely pushed out with the thumb (see Fig. 124).

There are brackets on the front and back of the device. Before showing the number, the charged apparatus is placed in the vest pocket. Palming one of the cigarettes (the seventh), the artist shows that his hands are empty. Then he takes out a palmed cigarette and, smoking it, quietly takes out an apparatus from his pocket; also palms it and starts showing the focus. At the end of the number, the apparatus is discreetly hidden, and the hands are shown empty.

Machine for thinning flowers in gardens
02.05.2024
In modern agriculture, technological progress is developing aimed at increasing the efficiency of plant care processes. The innovative Florix flower thinning machine was presented in Italy, designed to optimize the harvesting stage. This tool is equipped with mobile arms, allowing it to be easily adapted to the needs of the garden. The operator can adjust the speed of the thin wires by controlling them from the tractor cab using a joystick. This approach significantly increases the efficiency of the flower thinning process, providing the possibility of individual adjustment to the specific conditions of the garden, as well as the variety and type of fruit grown in it. After testing the Florix machine for two years on various types of fruit, the results were very encouraging. Farmers such as Filiberto Montanari, who has used a Florix machine for several years, have reported a significant reduction in the time and labor required to thin flowers.

Advanced Infrared Microscope
02.05.2024
Microscopes play an important role in scientific research, allowing scientists to delve into structures and processes invisible to the eye. However, various microscopy methods have their limitations, and among them was the limitation of resolution when using the infrared range. But the latest achievements of Japanese researchers from the University of Tokyo open up new prospects for studying the microworld. Scientists from the University of Tokyo have unveiled a new microscope that will revolutionize the capabilities of infrared microscopy. This advanced instrument allows you to see the internal structures of living bacteria with amazing clarity on the nanometer scale. Typically, mid-infrared microscopes are limited by low resolution, but the latest development from Japanese researchers overcomes these limitations. According to scientists, the developed microscope allows creating images with a resolution of up to 120 nanometers, which is 30 times higher than the resolution of traditional microscopes. ... >>
Air trap for insects
01.05.2024
Agriculture is one of the key sectors of the economy, and pest control is an integral part of this process. A team of scientists from the Indian Council of Agricultural Research-Central Potato Research Institute (ICAR-CPRI), Shimla, has come up with an innovative solution to this problem - a wind-powered insect air trap. This device addresses the shortcomings of traditional pest control methods by providing real-time insect population data. The trap is powered entirely by wind energy, making it an environmentally friendly solution that requires no power. Its unique design allows monitoring of both harmful and beneficial insects, providing a complete overview of the population in any agricultural area. “By assessing target pests at the right time, we can take necessary measures to control both pests and diseases,” says Kapil ... >>
Random news from the Archive Created an elastic form of carbon
04.07.2017
A joint research team from the Carnegie Institution, Washington, USA, and Yanshan University, China, has synthesized a material that is carbon in a new form. This material is very, very strong, but the most interesting thing is that it has elastic properties, like rubber. What's more, the new form of carbon is capable of conducting light and electricity through itself, making it possible to use all this in a very wide range of applications, from space and military equipment to household appliances.
A new form of carbon was obtained by applying pressure and high temperature to one of the amorphous forms of carbon, which does not have an ordered structure, called glassy carbon. This starting material was placed under a pressure of 250 thousand times atmospheric pressure and heated to a temperature of about a thousand degrees Celsius. Under these conditions, carbon atoms form chains that connect to each other in various ways. And the result is a form of carbon that simultaneously has the properties of graphite and diamond.
Obtaining a new form of carbon was the result of a number of experiments. In some experiments, scientists exposed glassy carbon to high pressure at room temperature, while in others they simply heated carbon to ultrahigh temperatures. The material obtained as a result of the first experiments had absolutely no elasticity and was not able to restore its shape even after slight deformation. And in the second case, diamond nanocrystals began to form inside the carbon.
And as a result of one of the intermediate experiments, which used heating to a moderately high temperature, the scientists obtained a new carbon material that can compress more than twice as much as other carbon ceramic materials. Moreover, the new elastic carbon is able to completely restore its original shape in the place of sufficiently strong local deformations.
"Lightweight materials with high strength and elasticity are required in a wide variety of applications. In some cases, these materials are used in practice, despite their high cost, the light weight and other unique properties of such materials come to the fore," says Zhisheng Zhao ( Zhisheng Zhao is a professor at Yanshan University.
