Focus Description:

For many centuries there has been a legend that Indian fakirs have levitation and can hang in the air for hours and even days in a lying position without support. Rumors that this was possible led the illusionists of Europe and America to invent their own methods of holding the body in the air without support. However, as a rule, the production of such illusions is very expensive, the props are difficult to transport, and they can only be shown on large stages of well-equipped theaters. The variant of this illusion, which you will now get acquainted with, unlike others, is inexpensive, can be shown on almost any stage that has backstage, and is organized easily and quickly.

The illusionist demonstrates to the public a thin board, which lies on two ordinary goats used for scaffolding. The goats on which the board rests are about 3 feet (1 m) high. The scaffolding stands in the middle of the stage, and the audience can clearly see how simple this device is. A beautiful girl appears on the stage and sits on the board, then with the help of an illusionist, she lies down on it. Walking around the girl, the illusionist leans over her and hypnotizes her. The girl's eyes close, and her hand dangles helplessly from the board. Carefully placing the girl's hand on the board, the illusionist approaches the girl's feet and slowly pulls out one of the supports from under the board. The girl is magically held in a horizontal position on the board, although the goats under the board are only on one side. Stretching his hands under the board, the illusionist also pulls out the second goats. The audience is amazed to see the girl "floating" in the air: only the will of the illusionist keeps her in this state.

The illusionist again holds his hands under the girl, showing that there is no support under her, and she hangs due to levitation. Then the illusionist puts the goats in their old place and, snapping his fingers, brings the girl out of the trance. She stands up and bows with the performer to applause.

Focus secret:

Since this illusion is a classic example of this kind of representation, it is very important that you strictly follow the technique. Any amateur performance can only spoil the effect.

Except for the 12x54x3/4" (30x140x2 cm) plywood board, the entire structure is made from hardened steel bar 2" (50 mm) wide and 8 to 4 mm thick. The board is attached to the upper consoles with powerful brackets. Once you've made the structure, paint it black and cover the board with good quality black velvet. Trim the edges with fringes. The fringe will obscure the steel support just below the board. You will also need a beautiful rug, which you will throw on the part of the structure adjacent to the floor, and two light scaffolding (“goats”) of an appropriate height. The board will allegedly lie on the goats. In fact, the board rests on said structure, hidden behind the scenes. Paint the goats white (or leave the light wood unpainted) to provide a contrasting element that draws viewers' attention away from the board. If the board, covered with black velveteen, is also trimmed with black fringe, then the audience will leave the hall in the belief that only the white scaffolding was the support for the girl.

The structure must be installed immediately in front of the wings. The horizontal part of the support element must pass through the curtain, as shown in the figure. The brighter the curtain behind the design, the better. The bright coloring of the curtain behind the girl should create the impression of a complete remoteness of the board from the background.

The supporting console passes through the central slot of the curtain. The lower part of the support passes under the curtain and is covered with a rug.

Now place two scaffolds under the ends of the board, which shows the final result of preparing for the presentation.

1. Introduce the girl to the audience and invite her to sit on the board in the middle. Take her by the ankles and help put her feet on the board.

2. Go around the structure from the front and support the girl's neck as she leans back. Thus, she will lie with her head a little further than some scaffolds, and her legs a little further than others.

3. Walk around the head and stand behind the girl. The horizontal support console will be at your left wrist.

4. The next movement is to demonstrate the "fact" that the girl is separated from the curtain. Bend over the girl, supposedly hypnotizing her. When she closes her eyes, her right hand should limp off the board and hang, giving you a reason to go around the board, stand in front of the girl and put her hand on the board.

5. After adjusting the girl's hand, go to the end where her head lies. Stretch your hands under the board, remove the scaffold and set it aside.

6. Go around the girl's head and, standing behind her, make several passes with your hands over the prostrate figure, the support for which remains only at the feet.

7. Walk in front of the girl to the end where the legs are, and carefully remove the platform from under the board, leaving the girl hanging in the air without support!

8. Make several passes with your hands above and below the figure of a girl, magically hanging in the air.

9. Quickly place a platform under the board at your feet. Then go to the head and put the second scaffold in place. Snap your fingers as if you want to bring the girl out of a trance, help her jump off the board, and both of you bow.

Air trap for insects 01.05.2024

Agriculture is one of the key sectors of the economy, and pest control is an integral part of this process. A team of scientists from the Indian Council of Agricultural Research-Central Potato Research Institute (ICAR-CPRI), Shimla, has come up with an innovative solution to this problem - a wind-powered insect air trap. This device addresses the shortcomings of traditional pest control methods by providing real-time insect population data. The trap is powered entirely by wind energy, making it an environmentally friendly solution that requires no power. Its unique design allows monitoring of both harmful and beneficial insects, providing a complete overview of the population in any agricultural area. “By assessing target pests at the right time, we can take necessary measures to control both pests and diseases,” says Kapil ... >>

The threat of space debris to the Earth's magnetic field 01.05.2024

More and more often we hear about an increase in the amount of space debris surrounding our planet. However, it is not only active satellites and spacecraft that contribute to this problem, but also debris from old missions. The growing number of satellites launched by companies like SpaceX creates not only opportunities for the development of the Internet, but also serious threats to space security. Experts are now turning their attention to the potential implications for the Earth's magnetic field. Dr. Jonathan McDowell of the Harvard-Smithsonian Center for Astrophysics emphasizes that companies are rapidly deploying satellite constellations, and the number of satellites could grow to 100 in the next decade. The rapid development of these cosmic armadas of satellites can lead to contamination of the Earth's plasma environment with dangerous debris and a threat to the stability of the magnetosphere. Metal debris from used rockets can disrupt the ionosphere and magnetosphere. Both of these systems play a key role in protecting the atmosphere and maintaining ... >>

Solidification of bulk substances 30.04.2024

There are quite a few mysteries in the world of science, and one of them is the strange behavior of bulk materials. They may behave like a solid but suddenly turn into a flowing liquid. This phenomenon has attracted the attention of many researchers, and we may finally be getting closer to solving this mystery. Imagine sand in an hourglass. It usually flows freely, but in some cases its particles begin to get stuck, turning from a liquid to a solid. This transition has important implications for many areas, from drug production to construction. Researchers from the USA have attempted to describe this phenomenon and come closer to understanding it. In the study, the scientists conducted simulations in the laboratory using data from bags of polystyrene beads. They found that the vibrations within these sets had specific frequencies, meaning that only certain types of vibrations could travel through the material. Received ... >>

Problem: Too little ice and snow on the roads 12.10.2001

Due to global warming, there is too little ice and snow on the roads of Iceland in winter.

If the ice disappeared completely, then the Icelanders would give up their habit of driving on studded tires, but the difficulty is precisely that it is too early to give up studs. Driving through ice-free areas, cars not only spoil the road surface, but also raise clouds of fine dust into the air - concrete ground with spikes.

Doctors say that a person who regularly inhales such dust can develop silicosis at best, and lung cancer at worst. The same problem arose in some Scandinavian countries. To study the damage caused by studs, experts from the University of Newcastle (England) are driving a 14-ton truck on studded tires along a concrete ring.

The task of the experiments is to choose a brand of concrete that will better withstand abrasion and dust, from which it will not be so dangerous for the lungs.
