Focus Description:

The assistant brings a small cage with a live bird onto the stage. The magician takes the cage and, showing the audience, puts the assistant on the head. Then, taking a handkerchief from the table, he covers the cage with it (Fig. 206).

Having carefully straightened the folds of the swimming trunk, he goes around the assistant, takes the cage covered with a scarf, and, holding it, goes a little forward. Suddenly, abruptly waving his arms, he lets go of one hand from the cage, continuing to hold the handkerchief with the other. Only a handkerchief remains in the hand - the cage has disappeared without a trace (Fig. 207).

Props:

A small whip for a bird about 20x16x15 cm in size.

A beautifully painted, lined scarf with a wire frame embedded inside.

Device for attaching a cage with a carabiner.

Focus secret:

The secret of the focus is very simple. A wire frame in the form of a quadrangle is laid in the scarf, equal in size to the base of the cage (20x15x20 cm). On fig. 208 (left) shows a scarf folded along the line of the inner frame; to the right you see a spread out scarf, where the frame is shown in dotted lines.

With this handkerchief, the magician covers the cage standing on the head of the assistant, so that the quadrangular frame lies just on the lid of the cage. Adjusting the handkerchief, the illusionist walks around the assistant and, under the cover of the handkerchief, quietly attaches a carbine sewn to the strap to the cage. This, in turn, is attached with safety pins to the back of the assistant's jacket. Taking the handkerchief by the edges of the frame, the magician pretends to take the cage, but in fact, under the cover of the handkerchief, he nods the cage behind the assistant's back, where it hangs on the straps (Fig. 209).

The assistant must keep at ease and leave the stage so that the audience cannot notice that he has a cage behind him. To do this, as soon as the magician moves away from him, take two or three steps towards the side wings. The very exit to the backstage is masked by the passage of an illusionist or a second assistant, who takes out the equipment for the next number.

This trick, when carefully prepared, is very effective, but it is more interesting to show it as a joke trick.

Everything is performed according to the description of the external effect: the cage has disappeared, the magician bows to the audience. The assistant, having taken two or three steps to the side, turns around and ... all the spectators see that the “disappeared” cage is hanging behind him. The performer, not suspecting anything, continues to bow, and only the laughter of the audience brings him out of a state of calm. Looking around, he sees a cage hanging behind the assistant, and in embarrassment he tries to shield it with himself.
