FAMUSOV

Griboyedov A.S.
Griboyedov A.S.

Phraseologism: Famusov.

Meaning: A common noun for a bureaucrat and a careerist.

Origin: The protagonist of A. S. Griboyedov's comedy "Woe from Wit" (1824), an important Moscow gentleman, who holds the post of "manager in a government place", a careerist bureaucrat, obsequious to those above him and arrogant towards his subordinates. Some commentators explained his surname as derived from the Latin word fama (rumour), others explain its origin from the English word famous (famous, famous). This name has become a household name for people of this type.

Random phraseology:

What the hell brought me to this galley!

Meaning:

Regret for his own indiscretion, which put the speaker in a difficult, unpleasant position.

Origin:

The primary source is the comedy Scapin's Tricks (1671) by the French playwright Jean Baptiste Molière (pseudonym of J. B. Poquelin, 1622-1673). In his play, Scapin is trying to lure money from the miser Geronte for his own son under the pretext that his son was allegedly taken hostage by the Turks when he went to their galley. The miser's father feels sorry for both his son and money, therefore, counting out the coins, he repeatedly repeats: "And why the hell did he bring him to this galley!" (act. 2, yavl. 11). These words of Geronte brought to life another popular expression of Moliere: "I take my good where I find it."

Artificial leather for touch emulation 15.04.2024

In a modern technology world where distance is becoming increasingly commonplace, maintaining connection and a sense of closeness is important. Recent developments in artificial skin by German scientists from Saarland University represent a new era in virtual interactions. German researchers from Saarland University have developed ultra-thin films that can transmit the sensation of touch over a distance. This cutting-edge technology provides new opportunities for virtual communication, especially for those who find themselves far from their loved ones. The ultra-thin films developed by the researchers, just 50 micrometers thick, can be integrated into textiles and worn like a second skin. These films act as sensors that recognize tactile signals from mom or dad, and as actuators that transmit these movements to the baby. Parents' touch to the fabric activates sensors that react to pressure and deform the ultra-thin film. This ... >>

The attractiveness of caring men 14.04.2024

The stereotype that women prefer "bad boys" has long been widespread. However, recent research conducted by British scientists from Monash University offers a new perspective on this issue. They looked at how women responded to men's emotional responsibility and willingness to help others. The study's findings could change our understanding of what makes men attractive to women. A study conducted by scientists from Monash University leads to new findings about men's attractiveness to women. In the experiment, women were shown photographs of men with brief stories about their behavior in various situations, including their reaction to an encounter with a homeless person. Some of the men ignored the homeless man, while others helped him, such as buying him food. A study found that men who showed empathy and kindness were more attractive to women compared to men who showed empathy and kindness. ... >>

Solar oil from greenery 28.09.2005

Someday the source of diesel fuel will not be oil wells, but plants, an American scientist believes.

James Damsik and his colleagues from the University of Wisconsin-Madison propose to rely on carbohydrates, which make up 75% of the dry weight of plants, for the manufacture of biofuels, but not to turn them into ethanol, but to go the other way: directly convert vegetable carbohydrates into long hydrocarbon chains - they are and are diesel fuel.

Because oil and water are immiscible, these hydrocarbons will float on the surface of the reactor where they can be easily scooped out. In order to turn the short and sometimes closed carbon skeletons of plant carbohydrates into long molecules of diesel fuel, scientists conducted several reactions involving catalysts and hydrogen, and H2 is supposed to be extracted again from plants.

The experiment has so far been delivered in its pure form - chemists used carbohydrates themselves. Plants, apparently, will have to be pre-treated.
