Phraseologism: Everything flows. Everything is changing (moving).

Meaning: About the constant variability of all things.

Origin: The expression sets forth the essence of the teachings of one of the early founders of dialectics, the Greek materialist philosopher Heraclitus of Ephesus (c. 530-470 BC). In his great philosophical work, from which only minor fragments have survived, Heraclitus proved a completely new idea for that era, that everything in nature moves, changes, everything is in the process of arising and disappearing. The expressions: "Everything flows", "Everything changes" are absent in the surviving passages from Heraclitus. They are known in the transmission of Aristotle and Plato. Aristotle ("On Heaven"), referring to the teachings of his predecessors-philosophers, writes: "Some admit that everything arises and flows ... It seems that Heraclitus of Ephesus, among many others, teaches this." Plato ("Cratyl"), reports: "Heraclitus says that everything moves and costs nothing, and, likening existence to the flow of a river, adds that it is impossible to enter the same river twice."

This heating melts the metal powder, but it also introduces areas of internal mechanical stress and deformation of the part to be manufactured. And all these things are practically unpredictable, which makes it impossible to somehow compensate for them. However, a group of researchers from the University of Cambridge found a way to solve the problem described above. With the help of special holographic images generated by a computer using complex algorithms, it is possible to control the distribution of laser light energy in three dimensions, which makes it possible to avoid unnecessary heating of the manufactured part. "Instead of using a single beam of high-power laser light, we use several beams of laser light that are focused in a specific way at the right point in three-dimensional space," says Professor Tim Wilkinson (Tim Wilkinson), head of this project, - "This allows us to print parts "in a more three-dimensional way and avoid thermal distortion. The hologram from which the XNUMXD object is printed is calculated and modified by the computer at a rate of about a thousand times per second to improve control over the distribution of energy. At the same time, the algorithms that produce the control hologram take into account a number of subtleties, such as the properties of the materials used, optical distortions, current temperature, etc. "This holographic approach allows us to do things that were previously impossible to do. Now scientists have already created a pilot plant with three lasers whose beams are reflected from a silicon "microdisplay", a thin layer of liquid crystals on the surface of a silicon chip, which acts as a controlled diffraction grating and changes the phase of the reflected laser light beam. And in the near future, the Cambridge researchers are planning to create a more advanced installation, which will use eight lasers with a total power of 200 W, which is enough to melt particles of aluminum powder. In addition to testing the operation of liquid crystal microdisplays at this level of laser light power, scientists, using the new facility, will work with metal powders with the addition of plastics and resins to improve the algorithms for compiling control holograms. Plans call for a new and larger plant to start operating in 2020, and the project, which should result in a fully operational industrial plant, will be completed by 2022.
