Focus Description:

“It’s good to sit for an hour or two on the river bank with a fishing rod. But it’s a long way to get to the river, and the weather doesn’t always favor the fisherman. But it happens that you won’t find a suitable place, so you return from fishing with nothing,” the artist tells the audience. And meanwhile, despite all the hardships and surprises that await the fisherman, I really like to fish.

The performer claps his hands. An assistant enters the stage with a fishing rod in one hand and a glass jar or vase filled with water in the other. He wears a pouch around his neck. He gives the fishing rod to the magician, puts a jar of water on a demonstration table, which is in full view of the audience. He himself, with a bag hanging around his neck, remains on stage to help the presenter.

Having unwound the fishing line, the artist gives the end of it with a hook to the assistant; he, having taken out a nozzle from the bag, puts it on the hook. The artist throws a hook with a nozzle onto the floor of the stage 3-4 meters away from him and waits for the fish to bite. Suddenly he makes a hook and raises the rod - a fish is beating on the hook; he throws the fishing line over himself - and the fish falls into the hands of an assistant; he takes it off the hook, carries it and lowers it into a jar of water. Spectators see how the caught goldfish swims merrily in the jar. Then the assistant puts a new nozzle on the hook, taking it out of the bag.

The illusionist, in the manner already described, casts the bait and catches the second goldfish. The assistant takes it off the hook and puts it in a jar of water. In this way, 5-6 fish are caught, and all of them are safe and sound in a jar of water. The fishing rod is reeled in, the assistant takes it backstage, and the presenter, taking a jar of fish, walks around the front rows of spectators, showing them real goldfish.

Returning to the stage, the presenter addresses the audience. "The method of fishing I have shown is good from many points of view. The first is that it does not require large transitions: to the river and back. The second is that it is especially good to use it in waterless areas. Here luck does not depend either on the choice of place or on the weather - my fish always bite. Whoever liked this way of fishing, he can try it when he comes home! With this or another similar phrase, the artist ends his trick.

Focus secret:

The fishing rod with which the illusionist performs is the most common. Bamboo rod - 2-2,5 m long; normal fishing line - the same length as the rod; the usual bright float. But instead of a hook, a small carabiner is attached to the end of the fishing line, with which thin watch chains are supplied. The assistant attaches the nozzle to this carabiner, but he does it in such a way that it seems to the public that he is putting it on a hook.

The main secret of this trick lies in the special arrangement of nozzles. They are tubes with a diameter of 6 mm and a length of 35-40 mm (Fig. 50, A), which are glued from photographic film with cine glue on a round rod (made of wood or metal). A round plug 8 mm long is inserted into one end of each tube, having a wire ring, the fastening of which in the plug is clear from the figure. We need to make six such nozzles.

For each nozzle, you need to make a goldfish from a yellow silk ribbon (a total of six fish). The tape is taken 2,5-3 cm wide. A fish template is cut out of cardboard (Fig. 50, B); the widest place of our fish is 2,5 cm, its length is 7 cm. The template is superimposed on the tape and outlined along the contour with a soft pencil.

In order for the edges of the fish not to crumble, they proceed as follows: a polyvinyl acetate emulsion (PVA glue) is diluted with water to the density of liquid cream and then it is circled over a pencil contour with a soft watercolor brush; when the emulsion dries, the fish is cut out with scissors, and then painted on both sides with scarlet aniline paint (paint for fabric) and a red chemical pencil. To prevent the aniline paint from blurring on the material, the part to be painted must first be circled along the contour with molten paraffin or stearin. After the paint has dried, the paraffin is removed by ironing the "fish" with a hot iron through blotting paper. The upper part of the head of the fish and the back are painted with light scarlet paint, and the fins, tail and pupil are painted with a red chemical pencil (this is clear from Fig. 50, B). A piece of wire or a lead strip P. is sewn to the end of the tail.

Having prepared all the details, let's move on to assembling the nozzle (Fig. 50, B). Inserting a plug with a ring into the end of the tube, we fix it with a thin wire, passing it through the hole a-b (see figure), and wrapping the ends of the wire around the tube, connect them together. Paint the tube and wire with pink oil paint and let it dry. Now we attach a strong thread (or a thin fishing line) to the fish’s nose, pass it through the tube and cork and fasten it near the ring so that the fish’s nose does not reach the lower edge of the tube by 25 mm, this is clearly visible in the figure.

If the fish, starting from the tail, is wound with a roll around the wire sewn to the tail and this roll is inserted inside the tube (Fig. 50, D), then our nozzle is ready for use, but it still needs to be checked. This is done as follows: taking the nozzle by the ring with two fingers and holding the tube lowered with the mouth down, the magician swings his hand from side to side, like a pendulum, without sudden movements - the fish, rolled up, should not come out of the tube, but it is worth the artist to make a sharp hand movement - and the roll should immediately pop out of the tube, and the fish should turn around to its full height.

This is exactly what happens during the session: the assistant hooks the attachment with a ring to the carabiner, and the magician gently lowers it to the floor of the stage and then makes a hook, that is, sharply pulls the fishing line to the side and up, which is why our "goldfish", jumping out of the tube, unfolds. Waving and spinning from the movement through the air, it seems to the audience alive.

However, this is only half the focus; the second part is performed directly by the magician's assistant. The fact is that behind the scenes on the assistant's table there is a very small aquarium with six not very large live goldfish; these cold-water fish are very unpretentious, they are sold in any pet store. Before the start of the focus, the fish are caught with a net from the aquarium and placed one by one in test tubes with water (Fig. 50, E), the diameter of the test tubes is 20-25 mm. In the bag that hangs in front of the assistant, near the thigh there is a special device for installing test tubes, we will talk about it a little later. The strap on which the bag is hung should be selected according to the height of the artist, so that the top of the bag is at the level of the bent fingers of his lowered hand, this greatly facilitates the performance of the trick.

On fig. 51 you see two narrow boxes glued together; they are made of thin thick cardboard. Each of the boxes is divided on top into six equal squares with a thin wire (0,6-0,8 mm), which is threaded through holes pierced in the walls of the boxes. Test tubes with fish are inserted into a large box, and nozzles with rings upwards are inserted into a smaller one, stretched wires do not allow them to fall. The height of the boxes is indicated in our drawing, the rest of the dimensions you have to determine yourself, they depend on the test tubes and nozzles you have. This is the special device we mentioned; it is fixed inside the bag on its wall, adjacent to the artist's thigh, at such a height that the audience cannot see the test tubes.

It remains to tell how the trick is performed by the assistant. When the leader casts the bait, his assistant stands at the back of his head at a distance of 3-3,5 meters. Having "caught" the fish, the magician throws it over his head in the direction of the assistant with a sharp movement, and he catches it in his hands. Taking the fish "off the hook", the assistant stands with his back to the audience, which allows him to quietly remove the fish from the carabiner, lower it into the bag and take a test tube with a live fish there. Turning to the audience, the assistant holds the test tube, secretly holding it between the palms of his hands; he holds it with such care, as if he really carries a live fish in his palms, while he gestures that it is about to jump out of his hands. Having released the fish into a jar of water, the assistant palms the test tube, and returning back, imperceptibly throws it into his bag. Putting on the next nozzle, the assistant always stands facing the audience and openly takes the nozzle out of the bag. So he does throughout the focus.

The success of this interesting and spectacular trick largely depends on the artistry of its performers, so rehearse it with the utmost care, achieving expressiveness in your actions and persuasiveness in every gesture.

How to catch a graffiti artist 03.02.2004

Traptec, an American acoustic tracking and security firm, has developed a system for identifying and locating graffiti "artists".

The aerosol can, releasing a jet of paint, emits a hiss in the ultrasonic range. Sensors of the Taggertrap system, placed on lampposts and connected to a network, pick up this sound even against the background of intense city noise and allow you to track the location of the graffiti artist.

There is also a portable version in a case, connected to other similar devices via a mobile telephony network. A police squad arrives at the location. By the way, the annual costs of washing dirty walls, fences, shop windows, subway cars, etc. are estimated in the US at 8-10 billion dollars.
