Focus Description:

The spectator shuffles the deck and deals about fifteen cards on the table in a pile. While she is doing this, the magician writes the prediction on a piece of paper and puts it in an envelope. Another viewer thinks of a number, writes it down on a piece of paper, and solves a simple arithmetic problem involving that number, resulting in another number. The cards in the pile are counted down to that number and the corresponding card is revealed. The envelope is opened, and it turns out that the magician predicted this particular card.

Focus secret:

1. Hand the deck to the spectator (let's call her Alexandra) and have her completely shuffle the cards and start dealing them face up in a pile on the table. While she is doing this, you begin to write on a piece of paper: "You will take the three of spades." You do not complete the divination until Alexandra has dealt the ninth card, so carefully count the cards dealt. The ninth card you enter into the prediction. Put a piece of paper in an envelope and seal it; tell Alexandra that she should stop dealing and can turn over the stack she dealt so that it is face down. You know, of course, that the ninth card from the top is the one you predicted, in this case the three of spades.

2. Now pass the paper and pen to another viewer who is good at simple subtraction. Let's call him Dimitri. Tell him: “Write any three-digit number so that I can’t see. Did you write it? Now write it in reverse order. Did it work? Unless you wrote a palindrome number (that is, one that reads the same on both sides), you will succeed two different numbers. Please subtract the smaller one from the larger one. How many digits do you have in your answer?"

3. Most likely, there will be three of them. Say, "OK, we'll take the one in the middle, that's..." It'll be a nine (nine is the only possible result; you can see for yourself). Tell Alexandra, "Please count eight cards from the top of the pile and turn over the ninth." Alexandra will do it; as we know, the ninth card is the three of spades. Ask her to open the envelope, reminding her and the rest of the audience that Dimitri chose a number at random, that she shuffled the deck herself, and that you could not know the order of the cards. However, your envelope contains a correct prediction.

Perhaps the result in Dmitry's calculations will consist of only two digits. In this case, ask him to choose one. If his answer is 99, it won't affect the focus in any way.

Air trap for insects 01.05.2024

Agriculture is one of the key sectors of the economy, and pest control is an integral part of this process. A team of scientists from the Indian Council of Agricultural Research-Central Potato Research Institute (ICAR-CPRI), Shimla, has come up with an innovative solution to this problem - a wind-powered insect air trap. This device addresses the shortcomings of traditional pest control methods by providing real-time insect population data. The trap is powered entirely by wind energy, making it an environmentally friendly solution that requires no power. Its unique design allows monitoring of both harmful and beneficial insects, providing a complete overview of the population in any agricultural area. “By assessing target pests at the right time, we can take necessary measures to control both pests and diseases,” says Kapil ... >>

The threat of space debris to the Earth's magnetic field 01.05.2024

More and more often we hear about an increase in the amount of space debris surrounding our planet. However, it is not only active satellites and spacecraft that contribute to this problem, but also debris from old missions. The growing number of satellites launched by companies like SpaceX creates not only opportunities for the development of the Internet, but also serious threats to space security. Experts are now turning their attention to the potential implications for the Earth's magnetic field. Dr. Jonathan McDowell of the Harvard-Smithsonian Center for Astrophysics emphasizes that companies are rapidly deploying satellite constellations, and the number of satellites could grow to 100 in the next decade. The rapid development of these cosmic armadas of satellites can lead to contamination of the Earth's plasma environment with dangerous debris and a threat to the stability of the magnetosphere. Metal debris from used rockets can disrupt the ionosphere and magnetosphere. Both of these systems play a key role in protecting the atmosphere and maintaining ... >>

Solidification of bulk substances 30.04.2024

There are quite a few mysteries in the world of science, and one of them is the strange behavior of bulk materials. They may behave like a solid but suddenly turn into a flowing liquid. This phenomenon has attracted the attention of many researchers, and we may finally be getting closer to solving this mystery. Imagine sand in an hourglass. It usually flows freely, but in some cases its particles begin to get stuck, turning from a liquid to a solid. This transition has important implications for many areas, from drug production to construction. Researchers from the USA have attempted to describe this phenomenon and come closer to understanding it. In the study, the scientists conducted simulations in the laboratory using data from bags of polystyrene beads. They found that the vibrations within these sets had specific frequencies, meaning that only certain types of vibrations could travel through the material. Received ... >>

Aircraft exhaust gases 16.12.2007

As found by Australian researchers from the University of New South Wales, the exhaust gases of aircraft engines can penetrate into the cabin of an airliner.

The fact is that in many aircraft, normal air pressure in the cabin is maintained by a blowing impeller, which rotates from the engine turbine shaft and compresses the rarefied air at high altitudes so that pilots and passengers can breathe. If the seals between the turbine and the pump are not tight, some of the gases generated during the operation of the turbojet engine may enter the cabin. This is especially dangerous for pilots who spend more time on flights than the most frequent flyer.

A survey of 250 pilots showed that 85% of them noticed an unpleasant smell in the cockpit, 57% felt bad because of it, and 8% were even forced to leave the service due to chronic poisoning.
