Focus Description:

The magician takes out the box, puts it on the table. Opens the lid and passes the "magic" wand inside, proving that the box is empty.

Then he overturns the box (Fig. 62), and the audience themselves are convinced that there is nothing in it.

Having closed the box and slightly opened the lid, the performer takes out three glasses of lemonade from it (Fig. 63) and serves them to the audience.

Then the illusionist takes the box, knocks on it with a stick, proving that it is empty, and puts it on the table, then knocks it over again and, showing it empty again, takes out various things from it. This may be repeated many times.

During the demonstration of the number, you can take out not three glasses at once, but one at a time, after each glass showing the box empty and tipping it on the table. If this trick is performed at a fast pace, the audience will no doubt be amazed by the instantaneous appearance of objects from an empty box.

Focus secret:

The secret is in the unusual arrangement of the box. Instead of a simple bottom, it has a swinging bottom-wall (Fig. 76, A). The box is depicted at the moment when the illusionist shows it empty to the audience, and they take the wall for the real bottom. If the box is placed straight, then the false wall will become next to the front side, and the bottom on which the glasses stand will become the bottom of the box.

In figure 76 we see a tilting device. Two boards C and D are connected together at right angles by corners B. Their width and length are commensurate with the box. The walls are hinged and screwed to the box. They can freely lean to the side or enter the apparatus. For clarity of the position of the glasses (charging), the front corner is not drawn, and its outlines are shown in dotted lines.

The corners must have a round edge so that the box does not touch them when it rolls over. Their purpose: to make the bottom-wall more stable and protect the charge from falling out.

Now the principle of the box is clear. The bottom-wall V-D stands motionless on the table. Board B lies with its bottom all the time on the table, and board D stands perpendicular to board C and the table.

If box D is closed with lid E and rotated at point G in the direction indicated by the arrow in fig. 76, then in this position the glasses will not be visible to the audience and cannot be removed from the opening of the box. If, having closed the box with a lid, put it straight on the table, then it will close the bottom B in such a way that the glasses will be inside our apparatus. By opening the lid, they can be easily removed from the box.

It should be strictly ensured that during all the turns of the box, the lid E is always closed, otherwise the audience will see the secret of the number - the rocking bottom-wall.

For convenience, you can make an inconspicuous latch in wall D, which will block board B as the bottom. But it is very easy to do without it.

When charging the device on the boards C-D, you need to place such things that in size would not exceed the rounded corners B, otherwise it will be impossible to work with the box.

We deliberately do not give the dimensions of the device, leaving the amateur to choose the most suitable one. We only note that the bottom-wall should be very tight, without cracks, fitted to the box and easy to walk in it so that the audience does not recognize the secret of the number in advance.

The box can always be charged a second time by taking things from a shelf attached to the table.
