Focus Description:

The magician lights a pencil.

Focus secret:

You must sharpen the pencil to such an extent that the lead should break off. Then cut the match so that only the head of the match sticks out of the pencil, and insert it in place of the stylus. And then just strike a box of matches with a pencil - and it will light up!

To make the focus look more effective, you can take a brown pencil.

Artificial leather for touch emulation 15.04.2024

In a modern technology world where distance is becoming increasingly commonplace, maintaining connection and a sense of closeness is important. Recent developments in artificial skin by German scientists from Saarland University represent a new era in virtual interactions. German researchers from Saarland University have developed ultra-thin films that can transmit the sensation of touch over a distance. This cutting-edge technology provides new opportunities for virtual communication, especially for those who find themselves far from their loved ones. The ultra-thin films developed by the researchers, just 50 micrometers thick, can be integrated into textiles and worn like a second skin. These films act as sensors that recognize tactile signals from mom or dad, and as actuators that transmit these movements to the baby. Parents' touch to the fabric activates sensors that react to pressure and deform the ultra-thin film. This ... >>

The attractiveness of caring men 14.04.2024

The stereotype that women prefer "bad boys" has long been widespread. However, recent research conducted by British scientists from Monash University offers a new perspective on this issue. They looked at how women responded to men's emotional responsibility and willingness to help others. The study's findings could change our understanding of what makes men attractive to women. A study conducted by scientists from Monash University leads to new findings about men's attractiveness to women. In the experiment, women were shown photographs of men with brief stories about their behavior in various situations, including their reaction to an encounter with a homeless person. Some of the men ignored the homeless man, while others helped him, such as buying him food. Cat recognition system 26.02.2018

A Dutch programmer has put a homemade device on the front door that sends a notification to a smartphone whenever a cat approaches the house.

Dutch front-end developer Arakis Garro lives with his wife and cat Bobis. Actually, the cat is not his, but a neighbor's, but since Garro moved into his current home, Bobis has become a frequent visitor. The cat likes to come into the house, and does it at about the same time, so Garro and his wife sometimes open the front door in advance. But they wanted to know for sure that the cat came to visit, so as not to inadvertently miss the visit, so Garro created a cat recognition system.

The device consists of a small video camera, a motion sensor, and a Raspberry Pi computer. When someone passes by the door, the sensor turns on the camera, and the algorithm analyzes the footage taken by it and, if a cat sits in front of the door, sends a notification to the smartphone of the owners of the house.

Garro used the free cloud-based pattern recognition algorithm Rekognition. The entire system cost Garro $50 and a few hours of time. Cat recognition accuracy, according to Garro, approaches 100%.
