Focus Description:

To carry out this trick, it is necessary to prepare many cards, on each of which put its number (two-digit number) and write down a seven-digit number according to a special algorithm. The magician distributes the cards to the participants and announces that he has memorized the numbers written on each card. Any participant calls the number of the card, and the magician, after a little thought, says what number is written on this card.

Focus secret:

To name the number, the "magician" does the following - he adds the number 5 to the card number, flips the digits of the resulting two-digit number, then each next digit is obtained by adding the last two, if a two-digit number is obtained, then the units digit is taken.

For example: the card number is 46. We add 5, we get 51, we rearrange the numbers - we get 15, we add the numbers, the next one is 6, then 5 + 6 = 11, i.e. take 1, then 6 + 1 = 7, then the numbers 8, 5. The number on the card: 1561785.

Air trap for insects 01.05.2024

Agriculture is one of the key sectors of the economy, and pest control is an integral part of this process. A team of scientists from the Indian Council of Agricultural Research-Central Potato Research Institute (ICAR-CPRI), Shimla, has come up with an innovative solution to this problem - a wind-powered insect air trap. This device addresses the shortcomings of traditional pest control methods by providing real-time insect population data. The trap is powered entirely by wind energy, making it an environmentally friendly solution that requires no power. Its unique design allows monitoring of both harmful and beneficial insects, providing a complete overview of the population in any agricultural area. “By assessing target pests at the right time, we can take necessary measures to control both pests and diseases,” says Kapil ... >>

The threat of space debris to the Earth's magnetic field 01.05.2024

More and more often we hear about an increase in the amount of space debris surrounding our planet. However, it is not only active satellites and spacecraft that contribute to this problem, but also debris from old missions. The growing number of satellites launched by companies like SpaceX creates not only opportunities for the development of the Internet, but also serious threats to space security. Experts are now turning their attention to the potential implications for the Earth's magnetic field. Dr. Jonathan McDowell of the Harvard-Smithsonian Center for Astrophysics emphasizes that companies are rapidly deploying satellite constellations, and the number of satellites could grow to 100 in the next decade. The rapid development of these cosmic armadas of satellites can lead to contamination of the Earth's plasma environment with dangerous debris and a threat to the stability of the magnetosphere. Metal debris from used rockets can disrupt the ionosphere and magnetosphere. Both of these systems play a key role in protecting the atmosphere and maintaining ... >>

Solidification of bulk substances 30.04.2024

There are quite a few mysteries in the world of science, and one of them is the strange behavior of bulk materials. They may behave like a solid but suddenly turn into a flowing liquid. This phenomenon has attracted the attention of many researchers, and we may finally be getting closer to solving this mystery. Imagine sand in an hourglass. It usually flows freely, but in some cases its particles begin to get stuck, turning from a liquid to a solid. This transition has important implications for many areas, from drug production to construction. Researchers from the USA have attempted to describe this phenomenon and come closer to understanding it. In the study, the scientists conducted simulations in the laboratory using data from bags of polystyrene beads. They found that the vibrations within these sets had specific frequencies, meaning that only certain types of vibrations could travel through the material. Received ... >>

External graphics cards for Thunderbolt 3 laptops 07.09.2015

Laptops are increasingly replacing desktops. But, despite the many advantages, mobile computers have a lot of disadvantages. The main one is weak modernization opportunities. In particular, it is simply impossible to replace the video card in most devices.

At one time, manufacturers came up with the idea to launch the production of external graphics cards that could be connected to laptops. Such solutions used either proprietary connectors or an ExpressCard port. True, the bandwidth of the latter is quite limited, which did not allow the use of flagship adapters. However, the ExpressCard has been supplanted by the USB 3.0 interface. But he left along with external video cards. The possibilities of USB 3.0 were still not enough to use productive 3D cards (the possibilities of which only grow with time), and mobile accelerators also gained strength.

Intel, together with Inventec, decided to revive the segment of external graphics solutions for laptops using the Thunderbolt 3 interface, whose throughput, we recall, reaches 40 Gb / s. This is about three times less than PCI Express 3.0 x16 is able to offer, but for most video cards it is quite enough. In addition, a USB Type-C connector is used, which allows you to transfer up to 100 W of power, which is enough, for example, for a GeForce GTX 950 video card (nobody has canceled external power supplies either).

So, Intel and Inventec at the IDF 2015 forum demonstrated two products at once: a ready-made graphics docking station, as well as a special case that can accept a regular discrete graphics card.

The docking station is based on the Radeon R9 M385 mobile graphics card, which is based on the Saturn GPU (aka Bonaire, aka Tobago) with 896 stream processors. The device is additionally equipped with three USB 3.0 connectors, a pair of HDMI ports, a pair of DisplayPort, an audio jack, an Ethernet port, and, in fact, a Thunderbolt 3 interface with a USB Type-C port.

As for the case, it is equipped with its own power supply and fans. For the demonstration, Intel used the Radeon R9 270X adapter, but no one bothers to use a more powerful solution. The main thing is that there is enough power of the PSU and free space in the case.
