Limit, don't cross it

Bible
Bible

Phraseologism: The limit, don't cross it.

Meaning: A frontier that cannot be crossed.

Origin: From the Bible (Church Slavonic text). In the Old Testament (the book of the prophet Daniel, 6:7-8) it is said (translated into Russian): "And so confirm, king, this definition and sign the decree so that it is unchanged, like the law of Media or Persian, and so that it does not has been violated." The "limit" in this case is a definition and a decree that cannot be transgressed or violated.

Random phraseology:

Fifth column.

Meaning:

Secret agents of the enemy - spies, saboteurs, traitors, traitors (published disapproved).

Origin:

From Spanish: Quinta columna. It is generally accepted that this expression is from a speech on the radio (autumn, 1936) by the Spanish General Emilio Mola (1887-1937), who during the years of the Spanish Civil War (1936-1939) led the attack of the Franco rebels on Republican Madrid. In it, he said, threatening the inhabitants of Republican Madrid, that, in addition to the four army columns at his disposal, marching on Madrid, there is also a fifth - in the city itself. These are secret supporters of Franco who will stab the Republicans in the back when a decisive attack on the city begins. A friend of the version, E. Mola said these words at his headquarters during a meeting with foreign journalists. There is a third version of the origin of this turnover: the English journalist Lord St. Oswald claimed that the expression "fifth column" first appeared in his telegram from Madrid, sent to the editors of the British newspaper "Daily Telegraph" in September 1936. But be that as it may, , back in the years of the Spanish Civil War, the concept of "fifth column" began to be associated with the name of General Mola. So, Dolores Ibarruri in the article "Defending Madrid - defending Spain" (gaz. "Mundo Obrero" dated October 3, 1936) wrote: "The traitor Mola said that he would throw "four columns" against Madrid, but only the "fifth" would attack. [...] The "fifth column" is inside Madrid, and first of all it is necessary to defeat it." The popularity of the expression was promoted by Ernest Hemingway's play "The Fifth Column" (1938).

Artificial leather for touch emulation 15.04.2024

In a modern technology world where distance is becoming increasingly commonplace, maintaining connection and a sense of closeness is important. Recent developments in artificial skin by German scientists from Saarland University represent a new era in virtual interactions. German researchers from Saarland University have developed ultra-thin films that can transmit the sensation of touch over a distance. This cutting-edge technology provides new opportunities for virtual communication, especially for those who find themselves far from their loved ones. The ultra-thin films developed by the researchers, just 50 micrometers thick, can be integrated into textiles and worn like a second skin. These films act as sensors that recognize tactile signals from mom or dad, and as actuators that transmit these movements to the baby. Parents' touch to the fabric activates sensors that react to pressure and deform the ultra-thin film. This ... >>

The attractiveness of caring men 14.04.2024

The stereotype that women prefer "bad boys" has long been widespread. However, recent research conducted by British scientists from Monash University offers a new perspective on this issue. They looked at how women responded to men's emotional responsibility and willingness to help others. The study's findings could change our understanding of what makes men attractive to women. A study conducted by scientists from Monash University leads to new findings about men's attractiveness to women. In the experiment, women were shown photographs of men with brief stories about their behavior in various situations, including their reaction to an encounter with a homeless person. Some of the men ignored the homeless man, while others helped him, such as buying him food. A study found that men who showed empathy and kindness were more attractive to women compared to men who showed empathy and kindness. ... >>

artificial shrimp 14.10.2020

Singaporean startup Shiok Meats, founded just two years ago, has in vitro grown artificial shrimp from real crustacean cells and is preparing to launch a new product on the market.

The authors of the startup claim that in two years they will be able to mass-produce artificial shrimp.

“We are seeing a lot of new players entering the market. The next five years will determine who will survive, who will go through a series of layoffs, and who will be able to support companies like ours and take this important step towards large-scale production,” explains the CEO and Shiok Meats co-founder Sandhya Sriram.

ShiokMeats created bioreactors and placed microscopic crustacean cells in them. There they are heated to 82 degrees and "fed" with pre-prepared substances that mimic the diet of real shrimp. The result is an analogue of a real shrimp with the same nutritional properties and taste.

The key goal of Shiok Meats is to make test-tube meat competitive with naturally occurring products.

“If the first stem cell-grown shrimp cost several thousand dollars, the current price is already about $300 per kilogram. Future plans are to reduce the cost of one kilogram of shrimp to $50 by 2021. This should be enough to compete in the wild-caught shrimp market," Shiok Meats said.

Shiok Meats is also considering moving beyond shrimp mince to more complex crab and lobster products.
