Focus Description:

Write numbers from 16 to 1 on 16 identical cards. Invite one of the spectators to guess one of the written numbers. Gather the cards in a pile face down, and then, opening the cards one at a time, stack them face up alternately in two piles. Ask the spectator who is thinking of the number what pile it is in.

Then lay the pile, which does not contain the intended number, on the pile indicated by the viewer, and, turning the resulting pile of 16 cards numbers down, arrange the cards again into two piles, as indicated above. This procedure with the decomposition of cards should be done only four times. After the fourth answer, you can easily find a card with the intended number.

Focus secret:

The card with the conceived number will be the bottom one in the stack of 8 cards indicated for the last time. This is easy to understand if you imagine where the card with the intended number will fall each time the cards are laid out.

After the cards have been arranged into two piles for the first time, then again put into one pile, as indicated in the trick condition, the card with the intended number is among the eight lower cards. These eight cards will be distributed evenly between the two piles the next time they are laid out.

This means that after the cards are collected in one pile for the second time, the card with the intended number will be among the four lower cards. The third time, it will be among the two bottom cards, and, finally, after the fourth unfolding of the cards, the hidden card will be the bottom one in one of the piles.

Air trap for insects 01.05.2024

Agriculture is one of the key sectors of the economy, and pest control is an integral part of this process. A team of scientists from the Indian Council of Agricultural Research-Central Potato Research Institute (ICAR-CPRI), Shimla, has come up with an innovative solution to this problem - a wind-powered insect air trap. This device addresses the shortcomings of traditional pest control methods by providing real-time insect population data. The trap is powered entirely by wind energy, making it an environmentally friendly solution that requires no power. Its unique design allows monitoring of both harmful and beneficial insects, providing a complete overview of the population in any agricultural area. “By assessing target pests at the right time, we can take necessary measures to control both pests and diseases,” says Kapil ... >>

The threat of space debris to the Earth's magnetic field 01.05.2024

More and more often we hear about an increase in the amount of space debris surrounding our planet. However, it is not only active satellites and spacecraft that contribute to this problem, but also debris from old missions. The growing number of satellites launched by companies like SpaceX creates not only opportunities for the development of the Internet, but also serious threats to space security. Experts are now turning their attention to the potential implications for the Earth's magnetic field. Dr. Jonathan McDowell of the Harvard-Smithsonian Center for Astrophysics emphasizes that companies are rapidly deploying satellite constellations, and the number of satellites could grow to 100 in the next decade. The rapid development of these cosmic armadas of satellites can lead to contamination of the Earth's plasma environment with dangerous debris and a threat to the stability of the magnetosphere. Metal debris from used rockets can disrupt the ionosphere and magnetosphere. Both of these systems play a key role in protecting the atmosphere and maintaining ... >>

Solidification of bulk substances 30.04.2024

There are quite a few mysteries in the world of science, and one of them is the strange behavior of bulk materials. They may behave like a solid but suddenly turn into a flowing liquid. This phenomenon has attracted the attention of many researchers, and we may finally be getting closer to solving this mystery. Imagine sand in an hourglass. It usually flows freely, but in some cases its particles begin to get stuck, turning from a liquid to a solid. This transition has important implications for many areas, from drug production to construction. Researchers from the USA have attempted to describe this phenomenon and come closer to understanding it. In the study, the scientists conducted simulations in the laboratory using data from bags of polystyrene beads. They found that the vibrations within these sets had specific frequencies, meaning that only certain types of vibrations could travel through the material. Received ... >>

Inflatable steel structures 20.06.2021

A design team from Poland and Switzerland has perfected a method for creating inflatable steel furniture that has revolutionized wind energy and construction. Designers - architect Oskar Zieta and materials scientist at the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology Philippe Domain - created the engineering method as a way to make steel products lighter and less expensive without sacrificing strength.

This technology, called free internal pressure deformation (FiDU), requires laser cutting of steel sheets that are precisely shaped with an accuracy of plus or minus 0,1 mm. These 1mm thick high strength steel sheets are then robot welded for maximum manufacturing precision.

The three-legged Plopp stools designed by Zieta are produced as rolled tubes from a thin sheet of steel. They can then be inflated with a simple valve to create a strong, lightweight and stylish seat. Thanks to the inherent strength of steel and innovative FiDU technology, the award-winning Plopp chair can withstand a load of more than two tons.

Since the compressed air pressure only needs to be 0,1-50 bar, furniture made using this method can even be inflated with a bicycle pump. Unlike existing hydroforming methods used in the automotive sector, FiDU does not rely on a mold to form the steel during inflation, so it can be done even at home.

This means that the metal will deform as it inflates according to its natural characteristics, making the individual contours of each piece unique, even if they are all of the same design.

While the concept of flat furniture has changed the face of interior shopping forever, the FiDU method offers even more convenience with less weight. Transporting even flat packing furniture takes up a lot of space, but uninflated Plopp stools take up almost no space compared to fully formed items. This leads to a significant reduction in transport-related costs and emissions.

Designers see the possibilities of inflatable steel going far beyond furniture. Thanks to the team's experience in architecture, they were successful in building a small bridge using an inflatable steel structure.
