Focus Description:

You have a small closed case in your hands. Open the lid and viewers will see that inside there is a small dial with a arrow attached to it. Close the lid of the case and hand it to one of the spectators. Ask him to put an hour on the dial without showing it to you, and then close the case with a lid.

When all this is done, take the case and, without opening it, name the number that the arrow points to. In exactly the same way, guess the time entered by other viewers.

Focus secret.

The case with the dial and arrow has a secret (Fig. a). The size of the case is 12 x 16 cm with a thickness of 2-3 cm. A dial is inserted into the case, in the middle of which a strong small arrow is mounted on an axis. No matter what hour the spectators set the hand to, without showing it to you and closing the case, you can instantly tell what position the hand is at.

Its axis is tightly soldered to the arrow. A small gear from an alarm clock is put on it. It is necessary to have two such absolutely identical gears with the same number of teeth. One of them is tightly soldered to the arrow axis.

Next to it is placed another - large - gear, which is fixed in the plates. This gear should turn very easily. Another small gear is attached to it from the other end, and they are placed together in the sockets (Fig.b). First, the head of a small screw is attached to the axis of the gear outermost from the arrow, which extends beyond the back cover of the case. The screw head is sawn at an arrow-shaped angle (Fig. c).

Focus without opening the case

Now, if you start to rotate the arrow, the soldered gear will rotate along with it. It will engage with a large gear, which will turn as many teeth as the one soldered to the arrow turns. The large gear, as it rotates, will also turn the gear with the screw head on the other side of the case. To prevent this head from protruding and being conspicuous, exactly the same screw heads are placed in all other corners.

The rotating screw is installed with a narrow cut so that it indicates the position of the clock hand. When the arrow is at the number 12, the head should be facing upward at an acute angle; when the arrow is on number b, then the head is facing down. But the rest of the time the head will show the opposite time - for example, it will display 3 o’clock as 9.

You need to practice very well in order to instantly, discreetly look at the screw on the back of the case, accurately name the hour at which the hand is set.

The most important thing is to make a rotating head that is no different from the head of the other three screws. Adjust the rotation of all three gears as best as possible. The arrow should spin very easily so that the audience does not have any doubts.

After the viewer places the arrow and closes the case, do not immediately look at the position of the screw head.

Do this when you pick up the case or at any other opportunity. After instantly looking at the head of the screw, immediately look away from it. Recall its position in memory and immediately determine the desired hour.
