Focus Description:

Tell the audience a funny story about how you got lost on your way to meet them, and show a map with arrows indicating your route. At first, your story sounds clear and convincing, but then the arrows begin to mysteriously change direction, and the amazed audience becomes completely confused.

Focus secret:

You will need a cardboard square of 25x25 cm. Carefully draw an arrow on both sides of it. The arrows should be located exactly at these angles to each other.

Hold the card this way: the arrow on the back (not visible to spectators) points in a vertical direction, and the arrow on the front points from your right hand to your left. Take the card with both hands: with your right hand at the lower right corner, and with your left at the upper left corner.

Focus Confusing Route

Start your story about wandering on the way to the performance venue. Explain that you intended to walk straight, without turning anywhere, for several kilometers, as the arrow indicates. While saying this, turn the card over several times in the direction indicated by the black arrows.

In this case, the arrow on the map will always point from left to right. Continue the story: “But soon the situation became noticeably more complicated. I asked a passer-by how to get to the right place, but it seemed that I was directed in the wrong direction. For the next few kilometers I turned right and left, moving in some strange zigzag. In the end I'm completely confused."

Meanwhile, without attracting attention, change the position of your hands. Now you hold the card by the lower left and upper right corners. Again, rotate the card several times, holding its corners. If everything is done correctly, the arrow will begin to “throw”, showing from left to right, then from right to left.

Stop spinning when the arrow points from left to right (as viewed from the audience).

Continue the story: “Then I asked another person I met, just to make sure I was on the right track.” With these words, again, without attracting attention, change the position of your hands: now the left one holds the card by the upper left corner, and the right one by the lower right.

"This time I decided that I'd had enough! After checking the map, I discovered that I actually needed to go due north." With these words, turn the card over again. As a result, your right hand will be on top and your left hand will be below. The arrow on the front side will point upward (north).

After this, you can turn the map over in your hands several times, but the arrow will not change its direction, continuing to point north.

Gradually lead the audience to the climax: “But it was all in vain! I couldn’t get here to you. Finally, I passed this place, and I had to go back, walking a kilometer or so to the south.” With these words, lower your right hand to the bottom corner, and raise your left hand to the top, then turn the card over again. The arrow now points down (south).
