Barium bromate solution prepared in previous experience, cool to room temperature; white crystals of salt should precipitate. When there are enough of them, rub them with a glass rod. Maybe not the first time (requires skill), but when rubbed, flashes of light will appear.

For what reason - after all, chemical processes are no longer going on, and crystallization has also ended?

Indeed, the reason here is different - friction. And this phenomenon is triboluminescence (in Greek tribos - friction). There are substances that are very sensitive to friction and begin to glow in the dark not only when rubbed, but even when shaken. True, these substances are not the most common, but maybe they are in the school chemistry room or in the chemistry circle. Here are two of them: zinc sulfide ZnS with the addition of 0,02% manganese sulfide MnS; cadmium sulfide CdS. However, among the substances that emit light when rubbed, there are surprisingly ordinary ones. For example, sucrose.

In a large porcelain mortar, pour a little refined (i.e., refined) granulated sugar on the bottom. Enter a dark room and stay there for a few minutes. When your eyes get used to the darkness, at first slowly, then gradually speeding up the pace, rub the granulated sugar in a circular motion with a porcelain pestle. Soon, bluish sparks will appear, which will merge into a luminous ring. If you do not speed up the pace of rubbing, then sparks will flash under the pestle here and there.

A simplified version of the experiment: firmly hold a piece of refined sugar in your hand and strike it several times on a rough surface - faience, ceramic. Do this, as before, in the dark. If your eyes are used to it, you will see luminous stripes that go out as soon as they flare up.

Radiation during triboluminescence is explained by electric discharges that occur during the destruction of crystals. That is why it stops when the sugar crystals in the mortar are ground. Powdered sugar does not glow from friction.

Artificial leather for touch emulation 15.04.2024

In a modern technology world where distance is becoming increasingly commonplace, maintaining connection and a sense of closeness is important. Recent developments in artificial skin by German scientists from Saarland University represent a new era in virtual interactions. German researchers from Saarland University have developed ultra-thin films that can transmit the sensation of touch over a distance. This cutting-edge technology provides new opportunities for virtual communication, especially for those who find themselves far from their loved ones. The ultra-thin films developed by the researchers, just 50 micrometers thick, can be integrated into textiles and worn like a second skin. These films act as sensors that recognize tactile signals from mom or dad, and as actuators that transmit these movements to the baby. Parents' touch to the fabric activates sensors that react to pressure and deform the ultra-thin film. This ... >>

Petgugu Global cat litter 15.04.2024

Taking care of pets can often be a challenge, especially when it comes to keeping your home clean. A new interesting solution from the Petgugu Global startup has been presented, which will make life easier for cat owners and help them keep their home perfectly clean and tidy. Startup Petgugu Global has unveiled a unique cat toilet that can automatically flush feces, keeping your home clean and fresh. This innovative device is equipped with various smart sensors that monitor your pet's toilet activity and activate to automatically clean after use. The device connects to the sewer system and ensures efficient waste removal without the need for intervention from the owner. Additionally, the toilet has a large flushable storage capacity, making it ideal for multi-cat households. The Petgugu cat litter bowl is designed for use with water-soluble litters and offers a range of additional ... >>

The attractiveness of caring men 14.04.2024

The stereotype that women prefer "bad boys" has long been widespread. However, recent research conducted by British scientists from Monash University offers a new perspective on this issue. They looked at how women responded to men's emotional responsibility and willingness to help others. The study's findings could change our understanding of what makes men attractive to women. A study conducted by scientists from Monash University leads to new findings about men's attractiveness to women. In the experiment, women were shown photographs of men with brief stories about their behavior in various situations, including their reaction to an encounter with a homeless person. Some of the men ignored the homeless man, while others helped him, such as buying him food. A study found that men who showed empathy and kindness were more attractive to women compared to men who showed empathy and kindness. ... >>

ultrasound medicine 18.01.2008

Physicists around the world believe that ultrasound will help cure many diseases.

In New Orleans (USA) November 26, 2007 a conference was held, which was dedicated to ultrasound medicine. From the reports presented there, it follows that the use of ultrasound in medicine has long been not limited to diagnostics. For example, an ultrasonic beam can be turned into a surgical instrument. To do this, you need to focus the sound wave, and all its energy will be concentrated in an area the size of a grain of rice. As a result, ultrasound begins to behave like a laser beam, that is, it heats the tissue.

At the same time, ultrasound works not only as a scalpel. For example, Vesna Zhderich of the University of George Washington claims that it can be used to stop internal bleeding: under the influence of heat, the blood coagulates, the tissue around the wound is destroyed and a blood clot occurs that closes the wound. So it is possible to stop bleeding in the liver, kidneys, deeply located blood vessels.

Scientists from the University of Michigan, led by Zhzhen Zu, went further. They propose to create a new type of ultrasonic scalpel, which, without any heating, will tear the tissue in the right place thanks to cavitation bubbles. Moreover, you can follow the movement of this scalpel inside the body, since the bubbles are perfectly visible using a tomograph or an ultrasound device.

The main advantage of an ultrasonic instrument is that a sound wave, unlike, say, a laser beam, can penetrate into any most hidden corner of the body.
