I hope you still have the apparatus in which we recently heated the air? Yes, yes, the same one: a bottle with a cork and a straw. Now we use it for a new experience. We will no longer heat air, but water.

This time, fill the bottle with water all the way to the top, to the rim of the neck. Pull the tube up and plug the bottle with a cork. The excess water displaced by the cork will rise through the tube. Let it be installed there at a height of 1-2 cm above the cork. If there is more, lay off. It’s good to tint the water with ink here too.

Now the water in the bottle needs to be heated. But here already the warmth of your hands is not enough. You will have to install the bottle in a pot of water, placing two sticks so that there is also a water layer under the bottom of the bottle, and put the whole structure on fire. This is called "heating in a water bath". You can’t put the bottle directly on the fire: it will burst.

We heat the water

Keep an eye on the water level in the tube. I hope you didn't forget to tint the water with ink this time too? Look: the level has dropped a little ... What is it, does water shrink when heated? But don't jump to conclusions. The water level in the tube crept up again and rises further and further. He is now taller than he was in the beginning.

This means that water expands when heated. Well, why did the level go down in the first place? Can't you guess? Yes, because the bottle was the first to heat up and also expanded. And then the heat came to the water!

Artificial leather for touch emulation 15.04.2024

In a modern technology world where distance is becoming increasingly commonplace, maintaining connection and a sense of closeness is important. Recent developments in artificial skin by German scientists from Saarland University represent a new era in virtual interactions. German researchers from Saarland University have developed ultra-thin films that can transmit the sensation of touch over a distance. This cutting-edge technology provides new opportunities for virtual communication, especially for those who find themselves far from their loved ones. The ultra-thin films developed by the researchers, just 50 micrometers thick, can be integrated into textiles and worn like a second skin. These films act as sensors that recognize tactile signals from mom or dad, and as actuators that transmit these movements to the baby. Parents' touch to the fabric activates sensors that react to pressure and deform the ultra-thin film. This ... >>

The attractiveness of caring men 14.04.2024

The stereotype that women prefer "bad boys" has long been widespread. However, recent research conducted by British scientists from Monash University offers a new perspective on this issue. They looked at how women responded to men's emotional responsibility and willingness to help others. The study's findings could change our understanding of what makes men attractive to women. A study conducted by scientists from Monash University leads to new findings about men's attractiveness to women. In the experiment, women were shown photographs of men with brief stories about their behavior in various situations, including their reaction to an encounter with a homeless person. Some of the men ignored the homeless man, while others helped him, such as buying him food. A study found that men who showed empathy and kindness were more attractive to women compared to men who showed empathy and kindness. ... >>

Around the world on solar power 07.12.2010

The trimaran "Turanor" (in the language of elves from Tolkien's epic "The Lord of the Rings" this name means "power of the Sun") was built at a shipyard in Kiel (Germany).

Almost the entire deck of the vessel, 31 meters long and 15 meters wide, is covered with solar panels with a total area of 500 square meters, which power the electric motors. At night, lithium-ion batteries weighing about 12 tons provide energy.

In 2011, the Swiss entrepreneur Rafael Domzhan intends to circumnavigate the world with a length of 50 kilometers on this solar vessel. According to his calculations, the journey will take 160 days.
