Different substances expand in volume when heated. This applies to solids, liquids and gases as well.

The most obvious example of the expansion of liquids when heated, when no experiment is needed, is a thermometer. The alcohol or mercury of the thermometer, when heated, rises up the scale until it reaches a certain equilibrium and stops.

Take a small medicine bottle or bottle, preferably with a screw cap. Make a thin hole in the cork and insert a clean ballpoint pen into it. The place where the rod entered the cork, coat with plasticine. With a pipette, fill the rod with soapy water (such water with diluted soap, as is usually done for blowing soap bubbles). Dip the vial or bottle into a glass of hot water. Now, from the outer end of the rod, small soap bubbles will begin to rise - one by one. Each new bubble knocks down the previous one, and, finally, one remains, which arose "on its last breath." It is quite firmly held on the end of the rod. Bubbles appeared from the expansion of air in the bottle when it was heated with water.

Expansion when heated

Let's do an experiment with the expansion from heating a solid object. It would be nice to find a metal ball from billiards or from a ball bearing. By its size, look for some kind of metal plate with a hole. If the diameter of the hole is smaller than the ball, widen it with a round file. Make sure that the ball, if it is placed on the hole, falls through without lingering in it. But there should be no gap between the ball and the hole.

Put the ball on the hot plate. If the stove is gas, then put it on a metal circle that every housewife has to protect some dishes from burning. When the ball heats up well, take it with pliers and quickly put it on the hole in the plate, previously fixed above the metal box. The ball will increase in size from heating and will stay in the hole until it cools. When it cools down, it will slide right through it. (Note that the ball will darken from strong heating, so you need to take a ball that you don’t mind spoiling.)

Expansion when heated

The fact that the size of an object changes when heated should be well remembered when pouring hot water into a cold glass or jar. If you immediately pour boiling water into a glass dish, then the glass, expanding, will burst. Therefore, always, before pouring hot water, you need to prepare the dishes, rinse them with less hot water so that the glass heats up gradually.

Artificial leather for touch emulation 15.04.2024

In a modern technology world where distance is becoming increasingly commonplace, maintaining connection and a sense of closeness is important. Recent developments in artificial skin by German scientists from Saarland University represent a new era in virtual interactions. German researchers from Saarland University have developed ultra-thin films that can transmit the sensation of touch over a distance. This cutting-edge technology provides new opportunities for virtual communication, especially for those who find themselves far from their loved ones. The ultra-thin films developed by the researchers, just 50 micrometers thick, can be integrated into textiles and worn like a second skin. These films act as sensors that recognize tactile signals from mom or dad, and as actuators that transmit these movements to the baby. Parents' touch to the fabric activates sensors that react to pressure and deform the ultra-thin film. This ... >>

Petgugu Global cat litter 15.04.2024

Taking care of pets can often be a challenge, especially when it comes to keeping your home clean. The Petgugu cat litter bowl is designed for use with water-soluble litters and offers a range of additional ... >>

The attractiveness of caring men 14.04.2024

The stereotype that women prefer "bad boys" has long been widespread. However, recent research conducted by British scientists from Monash University offers a new perspective on this issue. They looked at how women responded to men's emotional responsibility and willingness to help others. The study's findings could change our understanding of what makes men attractive to women. A study conducted by scientists from Monash University leads to new findings about men's attractiveness to women. In the experiment, women were shown photographs of men with brief stories about their behavior in various situations, including their reaction to an encounter with a homeless person. Some of the men ignored the homeless man, while others helped him, such as buying him food. A study found that men who showed empathy and kindness were more attractive to women compared to men who showed empathy and kindness. ... >>
