Although we should be grateful to air for the fact that it gives us the opportunity to talk to each other, listen to good music, we still have to say that air is not the best conductor of sound. Sound is best conducted by solid bodies. After solids, liquids conduct sound well, and only in third place are gases.

Let's compare on a small experience how sound is conducted by air and an ordinary rope, in this case as a "representative" of solid bodies. Hang a tablespoon on two small strings and hit it on the table. You will hear a rather weak ringing. But if this ringing goes to your ears not through the air, but through the ropes on which the spoon hangs (for this you need to press the ends of the ropes to the auditory openings of the ears), you will hear a loud, bell-like ringing.

Now do the experiment by changing the spoons on the ropes. First, hang a large metal soup (draught) spoon and, hitting the edge of the table, listen to how it sounds. Then again, for comparison, listen to an ordinary tablespoon. And finally, listen to the teaspoon. In all three cases, the spoons sound differently: the lowest, bass tone was with a draft, large spoon, the sound of a tablespoon was a little higher, and the highest tone was with a small, teaspoon. The sound of the spoons depended on the frequency of their oscillations. The larger the spoon, the lower the frequency of its oscillations and, therefore, the sound is lower.

Spoon chime

If you manage to get a piece of dry ice, which is usually available from ice cream vendors, you can do an interesting experiment. Press a teaspoon against a piece of dry ice and you will hear a subtle howling sound. It will not last long, because the spoon, having cooled greatly, will stop sounding. It sounds because carbon dioxide is rapidly released at the point of contact between dry ice and a warm spoon. Escaping from under the spoon, it makes it vibrate at a high frequency, and we hear a sound.

Artificial leather for touch emulation 15.04.2024

In a modern technology world where distance is becoming increasingly commonplace, maintaining connection and a sense of closeness is important. Recent developments in artificial skin by German scientists from Saarland University represent a new era in virtual interactions. German researchers from Saarland University have developed ultra-thin films that can transmit the sensation of touch over a distance. This cutting-edge technology provides new opportunities for virtual communication, especially for those who find themselves far from their loved ones. The ultra-thin films developed by the researchers, just 50 micrometers thick, can be integrated into textiles and worn like a second skin. These films act as sensors that recognize tactile signals from mom or dad, and as actuators that transmit these movements to the baby. Parents' touch to the fabric activates sensors that react to pressure and deform the ultra-thin film. This ... >>

The attractiveness of caring men 14.04.2024

The stereotype that women prefer "bad boys" has long been widespread. However, recent research conducted by British scientists from Monash University offers a new perspective on this issue. They looked at how women responded to men's emotional responsibility and willingness to help others. The study's findings could change our understanding of what makes men attractive to women. A study conducted by scientists from Monash University leads to new findings about men's attractiveness to women. In the experiment, women were shown photographs of men with brief stories about their behavior in various situations, including their reaction to an encounter with a homeless person. Some of the men ignored the homeless man, while others helped him, such as buying him food. A study found that men who showed empathy and kindness were more attractive to women compared to men who showed empathy and kindness. ... >>

Talking on the phone while driving leads to an accident 13.01.2009

Traffic accident statistics show that in 2006 in the United States, talking on a cell phone while driving or dialing a number on it was the cause of 7% of serious accidents.

A Canadian computer firm has developed cell phone software that senses when the phone is in a moving car and prevents the driver from making calls. And for those who want to talk to the driver, the phone sends an SMS message: "The subscriber is now driving and cannot answer."

If the caller still insists, the phone asks the driver to pull over and take the call. True, the program is intended only for fairly complex and expensive models of phones equipped with motion sensors and running operating systems for pocket computers.
