The equalizer, as you know, is designed to adjust the frequency response of sound reproducing equipment. It consists of several regulators, with the help of which it is possible to change the gain of the amplifying device in rather narrow frequency bands. This allows you to get a complex shape of the frequency response, which is impossible to implement with traditional tone controls. As a result, the listener has the opportunity to significantly change the nature of the reproduced sound picture and thus compensate for the frequency distortions introduced by the sources of sound programs, acoustic systems and listening rooms.

Equalizers are usually built on the basis of active band-pass filters on the op-amp, and the more filters, the more you can change the frequency response. However, a significant increase in their number greatly complicates the control of the equalizer, so the number of filters is usually limited to 8-10.

The following is a description of the eight band equalizer. The range of its operating frequencies is 20 ... 20 Hz; transmission coefficient - 000...3; the tuning frequencies of each of the eight filters are shown in the table; quality factor (ratio of tuning frequency to bandwidth) of the filter - 4; gain adjustment range - +_ 1,12 dB.

Schematic diagram of the equalizer is shown in fig. one.

Equalizer
Fig. 1

It consists of eight active filters connected in parallel on dual op-amps DA2-DA5. The op amp DA1 assembled input and output buffer amplifiers. A resistor R4 is connected in parallel with the filters.

Since all filters are inverting, and signals pass through the resistor R4 without inversion, the signals are subtracted in the output amplifier. Due to this, the frequency response is equalized at the edges of the filter passband and the required range of gain adjustment in each band is obtained.

The filter circuits are the same, and their tuning frequencies are determined by the capacitances of the capacitors C7-1-C7-8 and C8-1-C8-8, the values \uXNUMXb\uXNUMXbof which are indicated in the table.

By moving the sliders of the resistors R7 - 1-R7-8, you can change the transfer coefficient of the corresponding filters, and, consequently, the frequency response in the band of these filters. In the extreme left position (according to the diagram) of the engine of these resistors, the transfer coefficient at the filter tuning frequency is maximum (+12,5 dB), and in the extreme right position it is minimum (-12,5 dB).

All parts of the equalizer, except for variable resistors, are placed on a printed circuit board made of foil textolite, a sketch of which is shown in fig. 2.

Equalizer
Fig. 2

In the equalizer, you can use fixed resistors VS and MLT, capacitors K50-6 (C5.C6) and KLS, KM, MBM (the rest), and capacitors with a small TKE should be selected for filters. Capacitors C7 and C8 are composed of two or three connected in parallel . The functional characteristics of variable resistors must be linear (group A), they can be either sliding, with linear movement, or axial.

When using sliding resistors (SPZ-23A), you can make a graphic equalizer. The position of the sliders of these resistors will clearly reflect the frequency response of the equalizer (Fig. 3).

Equalizer
Fig. 3

When using axial resistors SP, SPO, etc., the quality of the device will not deteriorate at all, but the visibility of the frequency response adjustment will decrease.

The equalizer does not require any special adjustment, it is only necessary to pre-select the capacitances of the filter capacitors with an accuracy of no worse than 5 ... 10%.

To power the equalizer, you need a bipolar stabilized power supply with a voltage of 12 ... 15 V and a current of up to 50 mA.

For a stereo complex, you will need to make two described equalizers and install dual variable resistors in them.

Alcohol content of warm beer 07.05.2024

Beer, as one of the most common alcoholic drinks, has its own unique taste, which can change depending on the temperature of consumption. A new study by an international team of scientists has found that beer temperature has a significant impact on the perception of alcoholic taste. The study, led by materials scientist Lei Jiang, found that at different temperatures, ethanol and water molecules form different types of clusters, which affects the perception of alcoholic taste. At low temperatures, more pyramid-like clusters form, which reduces the pungency of the "ethanol" taste and makes the drink taste less alcoholic. On the contrary, as the temperature increases, the clusters become more chain-like, resulting in a more pronounced alcoholic taste. This explains why the taste of some alcoholic drinks, such as baijiu, can change depending on temperature. The data obtained opens up new prospects for beverage manufacturers, ... >>

Major risk factor for gambling addiction 07.05.2024

Computer games are becoming an increasingly popular form of entertainment among teenagers, but the associated risk of gaming addiction remains a significant problem. American scientists conducted a study to determine the main factors contributing to this addiction and offer recommendations for its prevention. Over the course of six years, 385 teenagers were followed to find out what factors may predispose them to gambling addiction. The results showed that 90% of study participants were not at risk of addiction, while 10% became gambling addicts. It turned out that the key factor in the onset of gambling addiction is a low level of prosocial behavior. Teenagers with a low level of prosocial behavior do not show interest in the help and support of others, which can lead to a loss of contact with the real world and a deepening dependence on virtual reality offered by computer games. Based on these results, scientists ... >>

Traffic noise delays the growth of chicks 06.05.2024

The sounds that surround us in modern cities are becoming increasingly piercing. However, few people think about how this noise affects the animal world, especially such delicate creatures as chicks that have not yet hatched from their eggs. Recent research is shedding light on this issue, indicating serious consequences for their development and survival. Scientists have found that exposure of zebra diamondback chicks to traffic noise can cause serious disruption to their development. Experiments have shown that noise pollution can significantly delay their hatching, and those chicks that do emerge face a number of health-promoting problems. The researchers also found that the negative effects of noise pollution extend into the adult birds. Reduced chances of reproduction and decreased fertility indicate the long-term effects that traffic noise has on wildlife. The study results highlight the need ... >>

All U.S. vehicles will be switched from gasoline to gas 10.02.2012

The presidents of the United States cannot decide in any way which way cars will develop and what fuel will replace motor gasoline.

George W. Bush was a supporter of fuel cells, but then changed his mind in favor of bioethanol. Barack Obama initially bet on biofuels and electric vehicles, but said this week that scientists should come up with new ways to convert vehicles to natural gas. Apparently, he wants to find a way to use the record for the last 10 years, natural gas production, the price of which in the US has already fallen to less than $100 per thousand cubic meters. For comparison, in Europe the wholesale price of gas is kept at the level of 280 dollars, and in Russia - 120 dollars.

The gas is attractive because it can be used in conventional internal combustion engines. However, unlike gasoline, liquefied gas requires an expensive heavy tank, which reduces the range of the car and scares car owners. The US Department of Energy Research Agency (ARPA-E) will soon initiate a competition to develop a low-cost way to turn natural gas into liquid fuels with high energy density. It is possible that this will be a technology for converting natural gas into synthetic gasoline, which will not even require reworking cars, but will significantly reduce the cost of fuel.

Also, the US government plans to reduce dependence on oil by encouraging the production of medium and heavy trucks that run on natural gas or other alternative fuels. For this, the relevant road infrastructure will be deployed and new car models will be developed, as well as municipal buses and trucks converted to gas. At the same time, it is planned to find new ways to convert and store natural gas.

Unlike fuel cell, biofuel and battery vehicles, natural gas vehicles are already being sold in large numbers around the world. If American scientists manage to find a way to cheaply and safely store natural gas in a car tank, we will have a boom in gas vehicles, which, however, will once again push high-tech electric vehicles into the distant future.
