For several millennia, agriculture remained hoe-based. In those areas where the soil was soft (for example, in the Nile Valley or Mesopotamia), the field could be well cultivated with a hoe. Therefore, agriculture here began to develop rapidly in ancient times.

However, the productivity of the farmer was insignificant. Moreover, such favorable conditions were a rare exception. Usually, peasants had to raise virgin meadows, overgrown with perennial grasses, with a powerful interweaving of roots. For a man armed with a single hoe, these soils were a difficult, often insurmountable obstacle. There was a need for such a tool for cultivating the land, with which it would be possible not to dig up, but to cut the layers of turf from below. This tool was the plow.

The plow developed from a special tool of ancient farmers, which modern scientists have dubbed the "furrow stick". With the help of this stick, the farmer laid furrows in the field, dividing it into ridges. A distinctive feature of these sticks was the working part, directed at an acute angle to the handle. Their use gave the idea to the ancient farmers that the soil can be cultivated not by digging, as was done before, but by dragging. Then, apparently, the prototype of the plow appeared - a forked stick with a pointed end (here the drawbar and the plowshare are already visible in the embryo). Harnessing such a device, the farmer dragged it behind him, making a furrow.

Of course, such a tool could only be used on very soft soils, already loosened by many years of cultivation, where there were neither stones nor turf. In order to plow harder soils, it was necessary to increase the pressure on the shares. Thus the handle was invented. A further improvement of this plow tool can be observed in one ancient Assyrian monument. It was already in the full sense of the plow, which had all three of its main parts: drawbar, plowshare and handle. In this form, he required two workers: one pulled the plow, and the other directed it and kept it in the ground. All the first plows were driven by human power.

Of course, the peasant was burdened by such work, and after a while he began to harness bulls to the plow. At first, people simply tied the plow to the horns of oxen, later a yoke and primitive harness appeared. The speed of cultivating the land immediately increased several times, and the work itself became easier.

The first plows were made from the rhizomes of oak, beech, maple and some other trees and were solid pieces of wood. Then the plowshare began to be strengthened with iron. Many years passed before further improvements were made to the plow. In the writings of Pliny, a Roman writer of the XNUMXst century AD, we find a description of a plow, which, unlike the previous ones, is equipped with a wheel, a knife and mouldboards. The wheel prevented the plow from going too deep into the ground, the knife served to cut the turf.

An important innovation was the blade. The purpose of the blade is to turn over the sod, which was cut by the knife and plowshare. A plow without a blade during movement only loosened the earth. The blade turned the turf over so that the weeds were underground. The invention of the mouldboard was a huge event in the history of the plow. In this form, the plow lasted until the end of the Middle Ages, when new improvements were made to it.

The spread of the plow with an iron plowshare made a fundamental revolution in agriculture. Plow agriculture transformed agriculture, was its highest achievement, and to no small extent contributed to the emergence of many civilizations of the Old World.

The advantage of plow agriculture over hoe farming is so obvious that in the view of ancient people, its invention was the work of the gods. The Egyptians considered the plow a gift from Osiris, the Greeks - Pallas Athens, the Indians - Agni, and the people of China - the divine Shenpungu.

Artificial leather for touch emulation 15.04.2024

In a modern technology world where distance is becoming increasingly commonplace, maintaining connection and a sense of closeness is important. Recent developments in artificial skin by German scientists from Saarland University represent a new era in virtual interactions. German researchers from Saarland University have developed ultra-thin films that can transmit the sensation of touch over a distance. This cutting-edge technology provides new opportunities for virtual communication, especially for those who find themselves far from their loved ones. The ultra-thin films developed by the researchers, just 50 micrometers thick, can be integrated into textiles and worn like a second skin. These films act as sensors that recognize tactile signals from mom or dad, and as actuators that transmit these movements to the baby. Parents' touch to the fabric activates sensors that react to pressure and deform the ultra-thin film. This ... >>

The Petgugu cat litter bowl is designed for use with water-soluble litters and offers a range of additional ... >>

The attractiveness of caring men 14.04.2024

The stereotype that women prefer "bad boys" has long been widespread. However, recent research conducted by British scientists from Monash University offers a new perspective on this issue. They looked at how women responded to men's emotional responsibility and willingness to help others. The study's findings could change our understanding of what makes men attractive to women. A study conducted by scientists from Monash University leads to new findings about men's attractiveness to women. In the experiment, women were shown photographs of men with brief stories about their behavior in various situations, including their reaction to an encounter with a homeless person. Some of the men ignored the homeless man, while others helped him, such as buying him food. A study found that men who showed empathy and kindness were more attractive to women compared to men who showed empathy and kindness. ... >>

Drone-record holder 06.01.2018

The technologies used in the creation of unmanned aerial vehicles, multicopters, devices with multiple rotors, are becoming more perfect literally every day. These craft are getting bigger batteries and smarter power distribution systems, so they can stay in the air for longer.

Drone company Quaternium has demonstrated a new hybrid model HYBRiX.20. And this device managed to stay in the air for four hours and forty minutes, thereby setting a world record for the duration of a multicopter flight.

Most multicopter devices that you can buy in the nearest store or on the Internet are able to stay in the air for no more than 25-30 minutes at a time. Professional and custom-made aircraft have large energy reserves, for example, last year such a multicopter crossed the English Channel after being in the air for 72 minutes. However, there are other companies in the world, for example, Skyfront, whose devices can also be in the air for about four hours.

The official world record for the duration of a flight, registered in the Guinness Book of World Records, until recently was two hours, six minutes and seven seconds. Naturally, this record has been beaten more than once for a long time, but members of the Guinness Committee were not present at these events. However, Quaternium decided to do the right thing by capturing the flight of their drone on video, which is enough for a world record to be recognized.

Note that the HYBRiX.20 drone is a hybrid model with a gasoline internal combustion engine that starts when the energy in the batteries of the device comes to an end. Such a system is ideal for areas that require a long stay of the device in the air, for mapping, aerial photography, observation and control of crops.

“The low cost of the HYBRiX.20 drone makes it affordable even for ordinary farmers,” Quaternium writes, “And every additional hour in the air means less need for refueling / recharging, less manual labor and, as a result, higher profitability of use apparatus".
