7.4.15. In fire hazardous areas of any class, electrical machines with voltage classes up to 10 kV can be used, provided that their shells have a degree of protection in accordance with GOST 17494-72 * not less than that indicated in Table. 7.4.1.

In fire hazardous areas of any class, electric machines purged with clean air with ventilation in a closed or open circuit can be used. In case of closed-loop ventilation, a device must be provided in the ventilation system to compensate for air losses and create excess pressure in machines and air ducts.

It is allowed to change the degree of protection of the shell against water penetration (2nd digit of the designation) depending on the conditions of the environment in which the machines are installed.

Until the electrical industry masters large synchronous machines, DC machines and static converter units in a shell with a degree of protection IP44, it is allowed to use machines and units with a degree of protection of the shell at least IP20 in fire hazardous zones of class P-IIa.

Table 7.4.1. Minimum allowable degrees of protection of shells of electrical machines, depending on the class of the fire hazard zone

Type of installation and working conditions The degree of protection of the shell for the fire hazardous zone of the class
P-I P-II P-IIa P-III
Permanently installed machines, sparking or with sparking parts according to working conditions IP44 IP54* IP44 IP44
Permanently installed machines, non-sparking and without sparking parts according to working conditions IP44 IP44 IP44 IP44
Machines with parts that spark and do not spark according to the working conditions, installed on mobile mechanisms and installations (cranes, hoists, electric trolleys, etc.) IP44 IP54* IP44 IP44

* Until the electrical industry adopts IP54 machines, IP44 machines can be used.

7.4.16. Air for ventilation of electrical machines must not contain vapors and dust of combustible substances. Emission of exhaust air with an open ventilation cycle into a fire hazardous area is not allowed.

7.4.17. The electrical equipment of a portable electrified tool in fire hazardous areas of any class must be with a degree of protection of the shell of at least IP44; the degree of protection of the shell IP33 is allowed, provided that special technological requirements for the repair of equipment in fire hazardous areas are met.

7.4.18. Electric machines with parts that normally spark under the operating conditions (for example, electric motors with slip rings) must be located at a distance of at least 1 m from the places where combustible substances are located or separated from them by a fireproof screen.

7.4.19. For mechanisms installed in fire hazardous areas, it is allowed to use electric motors with a lower degree of shell protection than indicated in Table. 7.4.1, under the following conditions:

  • electric motors must be installed outside fire hazardous areas;
  • the drive of the mechanism must be carried out using a shaft passed through the wall, with a gland seal in it.

A New Way to Control and Manipulate Optical Signals 05.05.2024

The modern world of science and technology is developing rapidly, and every day new methods and technologies appear that open up new prospects for us in various fields. One such innovation is the development by German scientists of a new way to control optical signals, which could lead to significant progress in the field of photonics. Recent research has allowed German scientists to create a tunable waveplate inside a fused silica waveguide. This method, based on the use of a liquid crystal layer, allows one to effectively change the polarization of light passing through a waveguide. This technological breakthrough opens up new prospects for the development of compact and efficient photonic devices capable of processing large volumes of data. The electro-optical control of polarization provided by the new method could provide the basis for a new class of integrated photonic devices. This opens up great opportunities for ... >>

Primium Seneca keyboard 05.05.2024

Keyboards are an integral part of our daily computer work. However, one of the main problems that users face is noise, especially in the case of premium models. But with the new Seneca keyboard from Norbauer & Co, that may change. Seneca is not just a keyboard, it is the result of five years of development work to create the ideal device. Every aspect of this keyboard, from acoustic properties to mechanical characteristics, has been carefully considered and balanced. One of the key features of Seneca is its silent stabilizers, which solve the noise problem common to many keyboards. In addition, the keyboard supports various key widths, making it convenient for any user. Although Seneca is not yet available for purchase, it is scheduled for release in late summer. Norbauer & Co's Seneca represents new standards in keyboard design. Her ... >>

The world's tallest astronomical observatory opened 04.05.2024

Exploring space and its mysteries is a task that attracts the attention of astronomers from all over the world. In the fresh air of the high mountains, far from city light pollution, the stars and planets reveal their secrets with greater clarity. A new page is opening in the history of astronomy with the opening of the world's highest astronomical observatory - the Atacama Observatory of the University of Tokyo. The Atacama Observatory, located at an altitude of 5640 meters above sea level, opens up new opportunities for astronomers in the study of space. This site has become the highest location for a ground-based telescope, providing researchers with a unique tool for studying infrared waves in the Universe. Although the high altitude location provides clearer skies and less interference from the atmosphere, building an observatory on a high mountain poses enormous difficulties and challenges. However, despite the difficulties, the new observatory opens up broad research prospects for astronomers. ... >>

France to get rid of coal-fired power plants 24.01.2018

In modern conditions, coal-fired power plants are too expensive to build and maintain, so much so that it is easier to demolish the existing plant and build something new there than to continue its operation.

At the International Economic Forum in Switzerland, President Emmanuel Macron announced that by 2021 France will completely get rid of coal-fired power plants. Thus, he decided to approach this problem more decisively than his predecessor François Hollande, who set the same goal, but by 2023.

Such a promise may seem rather ambitious, but France has already made significant progress on this issue. Now the country receives most of its energy from nuclear reactors and hydroelectric power plants.

Thus, now the question of the complete elimination of coal-fired power plants is the dismantling of the Cordemai power plant. It produces 2600 megawatts of electricity and is the only coal-fired plant of significant size in the country. So 2021 is not as incredible a time frame as it might seem.
