Now the element base of various companies and countries of origin is available to the Russian radio amateur. On the one hand, this is good, but on the other hand, it can be very difficult to find the necessary, at least brief information on a particular product.

For example, you hold in your hands a "glass" with two conclusions - what is it? Diode? Zener diode? And if a zener diode, then at what voltage? In this case, it is useful to keep a simple attachment to the multimeter on hand, which allows you not only to distinguish the diode from the zener diode, but also to determine the stabilization voltage of the zener diode in the range up to 35 V.

The circuit is a DC-DC converter with galvanic isolation between input and output. This allows the set-top box to be powered from a multimeter source.

Zener ID

The PWM generator is made on a specialized microcircuit MC34063. To ensure complete galvanic isolation between the power supply and the measuring circuit, the control voltage is removed from the primary winding of the transformer. For this, a separate rectifier was made on VD2. The stabilization point (output voltage value) is set by selecting R3.

A voltage of about 4 V is released on the capacitor C40. The current stabilizer A2 and the tested zener diode VDX form a parametric stabilizer, and the multimeter connected to X1 and X2 measures the voltage on this zener diode.

When connected with the anode to "+", and the cathode to "-" of a diode or an asymmetric zener diode, the multimeter will show the minimum voltage. If you connect in reverse polarity (like VDX in the diagram), then for the diode the readings of the multimeter will be about 40 V, and for the zener diode, the stabilization voltage (if it is below 40 V).

For a symmetrical zener diode, the stabilization voltage will be displayed for any connection polarity.

Transformer T1 is wound on a ferrite ring with an outer diameter of 23 mm. Winding 1 contains 20 turns, winding 2 - 35 turns of PEV 0,43 wire. Winding - turn to turn.

The primary winding is located on one part of the ring, the secondary - on the opposite. It is not necessary to superimpose one winding on another.

Establishment. Instead of the VDX zener diode, connect a 10 kΩ resistor to the terminals and, by selecting the resistance R3, ensure that C4 is 40 V.

Texas Instruments has released new buck converters with up to 60 V input and up to 2.5 A output for the LM76002 and up to 3.5 A for the LM76003.
