Opened in 1880 by French physicists brothers Georges and Pierre Curie. There is a direct piezoelectric effect - when the crystals are mechanically stretched, a charge arises on their faces and an inverse piezoelectric effect - a change in the mechanical dimensions of the crystal under the action of an applied electric field. The Curie brothers discovered the piezoelectric effect on quartz crystals.
Currently, more than 1500 substances are known with a piezoelectric effect many times higher than that of quartz. The piezoelectric effect of a substance is characterized by a piezoelectric modulus, i.e. the amount of charge per unit of applied force (usually 1 Newton).
The table shows the characteristics of some piezoelectrics, where p is the density; e is the dielectric constant; d - piezoelectric module. If d is shown as a fraction, then the piezoelectric effect is different in perpendicular directions.
Piezoelectric transducers are used in ultrasonic technology and flaw detection, hydroacoustics, acoustoelectronics as sound emitters and receivers (acoustic antennas, microphones and hydrophones).
