A sufficiently large dose of ionizing radiation causes changes in the hereditary apparatus of a living cell - mutations occur, various kinds of unwanted rearrangements and breakdowns of chromosomes. To prevent such changes, chemicals are usually used. For the first time using an electric current for this purpose, scientists showed that such an effect, under certain conditions, can protect living cells from radiation damage.

Vetch beans served as a model for the researchers. For experiments, seedlings a few centimeters long were selected and irradiated with a dose of 250 roentgens. But at the same time, some plants were affected by electric current before irradiation, others - after irradiation. Then the seedlings were kept in a thermostat for 22 hours, and after that they were examined under a microscope.

Here are the results. After "pure" irradiation (without current), the number of cells with chromosomal abnormalities is 47 percent - much more than in control plants (in cells not exposed to radiation, mutations are formed only in two percent of cases). When the plant was treated with current, the number of affected cells was significantly less than in the case of "pure" irradiation - the result depended on the conditions under which the electric current acted on the plant. The protective properties of electricity manifested themselves best when the root was brought to the positive electrode (anode) before irradiation - then there were almost two times fewer lesions.

The mechanism of this phenomenon has not yet been fully explained, but the authors believe that the protective effect of the current is associated with the redistribution of ions between different tissues of the plant.

Machine for thinning flowers in gardens 02.05.2024

In modern agriculture, technological progress is developing aimed at increasing the efficiency of plant care processes. The innovative Florix flower thinning machine was presented in Italy, designed to optimize the harvesting stage. This tool is equipped with mobile arms, allowing it to be easily adapted to the needs of the garden. The operator can adjust the speed of the thin wires by controlling them from the tractor cab using a joystick. This approach significantly increases the efficiency of the flower thinning process, providing the possibility of individual adjustment to the specific conditions of the garden, as well as the variety and type of fruit grown in it. After testing the Florix machine for two years on various types of fruit, the results were very encouraging. Farmers such as Filiberto Montanari, who has used a Florix machine for several years, have reported a significant reduction in the time and labor required to thin flowers. ... >>

Advanced Infrared Microscope 02.05.2024

Microscopes play an important role in scientific research, allowing scientists to delve into structures and processes invisible to the eye. However, various microscopy methods have their limitations, and among them was the limitation of resolution when using the infrared range. But the latest achievements of Japanese researchers from the University of Tokyo open up new prospects for studying the microworld. Scientists from the University of Tokyo have unveiled a new microscope that will revolutionize the capabilities of infrared microscopy. This advanced instrument allows you to see the internal structures of living bacteria with amazing clarity on the nanometer scale. Typically, mid-infrared microscopes are limited by low resolution, but the latest development from Japanese researchers overcomes these limitations. According to scientists, the developed microscope allows creating images with a resolution of up to 120 nanometers, which is 30 times higher than the resolution of traditional microscopes. ... >>

Air trap for insects 01.05.2024

Agriculture is one of the key sectors of the economy, and pest control is an integral part of this process. A team of scientists from the Indian Council of Agricultural Research-Central Potato Research Institute (ICAR-CPRI), Shimla, has come up with an innovative solution to this problem - a wind-powered insect air trap. This device addresses the shortcomings of traditional pest control methods by providing real-time insect population data. The trap is powered entirely by wind energy, making it an environmentally friendly solution that requires no power. Its unique design allows monitoring of both harmful and beneficial insects, providing a complete overview of the population in any agricultural area. “By assessing target pests at the right time, we can take necessary measures to control both pests and diseases,” says Kapil ... >>

Citroen compressed air 16.09.2014

The French automaker PSA Peugeot Citroen has announced a special version of the C4 Cactus crossover, using a hybrid power plant that can run on compressed air. The ultra-efficient car will be presented at the Paris Motor Show (October 4-19, 2014).

The novelty is called the Citroen C4 Cactus Airflow 2L, from which you can understand that to overcome the 100-kilometer stretch, this car is able to use only 2 liters of fuel. For this, Hybrid Air technology is used, which allows the accumulation of energy in the form of compressed air pumped into a special reservoir by a hydraulic pump.

Similar to electro-hybrid installations, the Hybrid Air air system uses the method of energy recovery during braking, but instead of an electric motor, the C4 Cactus Airflow 2L uses an air pump connected to a transmission with a planetary (differential) gear. Only due to this development, French engineers have achieved an improvement in engine efficiency by 30% compared to the conventional version of the Citroen C4 Cactus.

It is assumed that using the Hybrid Air pneumotraction car will be able to move on gasoline (for this purpose, a 1,2-liter internal combustion engine with a capacity of 82 hp is provided), on compressed air and in a joint mode.

As part of its effort to reduce fuel consumption, Citroen has adopted a wide range of moving body parts to increase the vehicle's aerodynamic performance by 20%. In particular, the novelty received frontal active air intakes that regulate the flow of air into the engine compartment for cooling, as well as flaps on the wheel caps. Narrow tires (155/70 R19) have low rolling resistance.
