We had dinner, turned on the TV and settled down on the sofa by the light of an ordinary crystal chandelier. Light bulbs and a chandelier sparkle and hurt the eyes, the screen "glares"! Even one light bulb gets in the way! And without background light, watching a color TV is harmful to your eyesight. I had to cover the chandelier with a paper sheet. Watching TV has become more convenient, but this is not a way out, and fire safety is violated in this case! Maybe buy a table lamp, a noble floor lamp, light a candle? Each option has its pros and cons.

A day or two passed in reflection on this subject. And one evening it dawned on me - the way out is simple! All you need is an empty can of condensed milk or green peas. But it's not a problem.

With a caliper, I marked circles and circles on the bottom and walls of the jar, scribbled connecting lines with a scriber, and cut out a “shading” cap blank with ordinary scissors, similar to the head of Cheburashka from an animated film (Fig. 1).

After that, he bent the ears of "Cheburashka" and hung it on a light bulb. With its ears with round holes, the "shader" grabbed the bulb bulb and "warmed up" there. It turned out a background nightlight built into the chandelier. Having adjusted the desired tilt of the shadow towards the sofa, we continued to watch TV.

Inspired by success, one of the following evenings I cut out another "shade" - "cheburashka", but with a "torso" - for a table lamp (Fig. 2).

Sharing the Light
Rice. 2. "Shader" - cap for a table lamp: 1 - "shader" - cap (tin from a can); 2-lighting lamp in a minion cartridge; 3-table lamp

Now, it also serves as a night light. The round "body" enhanced the shading effect in the lateral direction as well. This made it possible to "split" the light from one light bulb: it illuminates one part of the room at full power, and the other - "half-hearted" and diffused light.

The positive properties of a suddenly invented simple solution turned out to be: no material costs, speed of manufacture, ease of removal and installation, and adjustability.

Such simple solutions pleasantly increase the comfort in the house.

Air trap for insects 01.05.2024

Agriculture is one of the key sectors of the economy, and pest control is an integral part of this process. A team of scientists from the Indian Council of Agricultural Research-Central Potato Research Institute (ICAR-CPRI), Shimla, has come up with an innovative solution to this problem - a wind-powered insect air trap. This device addresses the shortcomings of traditional pest control methods by providing real-time insect population data. The trap is powered entirely by wind energy, making it an environmentally friendly solution that requires no power. Its unique design allows monitoring of both harmful and beneficial insects, providing a complete overview of the population in any agricultural area. “By assessing target pests at the right time, we can take necessary measures to control both pests and diseases,” says Kapil ... >>

The threat of space debris to the Earth's magnetic field 01.05.2024

More and more often we hear about an increase in the amount of space debris surrounding our planet. However, it is not only active satellites and spacecraft that contribute to this problem, but also debris from old missions. The growing number of satellites launched by companies like SpaceX creates not only opportunities for the development of the Internet, but also serious threats to space security. Experts are now turning their attention to the potential implications for the Earth's magnetic field. Dr. Jonathan McDowell of the Harvard-Smithsonian Center for Astrophysics emphasizes that companies are rapidly deploying satellite constellations, and the number of satellites could grow to 100 in the next decade. The rapid development of these cosmic armadas of satellites can lead to contamination of the Earth's plasma environment with dangerous debris and a threat to the stability of the magnetosphere. Metal debris from used rockets can disrupt the ionosphere and magnetosphere. Both of these systems play a key role in protecting the atmosphere and maintaining ... >>

Solidification of bulk substances 30.04.2024

There are quite a few mysteries in the world of science, and one of them is the strange behavior of bulk materials. They may behave like a solid but suddenly turn into a flowing liquid. This phenomenon has attracted the attention of many researchers, and we may finally be getting closer to solving this mystery. Imagine sand in an hourglass. It usually flows freely, but in some cases its particles begin to get stuck, turning from a liquid to a solid. This transition has important implications for many areas, from drug production to construction. Researchers from the USA have attempted to describe this phenomenon and come closer to understanding it. In the study, the scientists conducted simulations in the laboratory using data from bags of polystyrene beads. They found that the vibrations within these sets had specific frequencies, meaning that only certain types of vibrations could travel through the material. Received ... >>

Screen with inflatable zones 03.05.2023

Scientists from Carnegie Mellon University showed the technology of Flat Panel Haptics. It allows you to inflate certain areas of the screen thanks to miniature pumps built under the display.

For the technology to work, it must be used in conjunction with OLED displays. During operation, certain areas of the screen will inflate, eventually protruding by about 1,5 millimeters. At the moment, only a limited set of keys can be inflated, and it takes about a second to assume a convex shape.

The technology will allow simulating interaction with a physical keyboard on touch screens, and will also help visually impaired and blind people control such equipment.
