For a hundred years everyone has been thinking about how to reduce the weight of a welding transformer. And I decided to try to reduce at least one and a half times: from 28 kg (the lightest household, not counting electronic ones) to 18, for example.

There used to be transformers with a choke in the secondary circuit. Let's rearrange it into the primary and begin to reduce the turns in the primary winding. Soon we will reach the saturation of iron, and - a short circuit. And we will turn it into a long one, because we have a choke in the primary circuit. We will bring the idling current to 0.3, or even to 0.5 of the nominal value. Then the losses in the wires will be 0.09 or even 0.25 of the losses in the operating mode. Not shiny, but tolerable. The open circuit voltage is 22-26V, we connect both windings in parallel, however, the voltage is not enough for welding, even if the windings are connected in series. I had to make an exciter to give an impulse of 3-7 kV exactly at the right moment.

And my transformer already decently cooks with a deuce, and a triple, and a five. From a household outlet, and does not knock out! With series secondary windings - even without exciter. And it only weighs 6 kg!

Renewables have overtaken fossil fuels 01.02.2021

For the first time in 2020, European Union residents received more electricity from renewable sources than from fossil fuels, according to the annual report of the Agora Energiewende Institute in Berlin and analysts from Ember.

The report, which has been tracking the EU's energy sector since 2015, shows that last year renewables generated 38% of electricity compared to 37% from fossil fuels. This is due to the targeted policy of the European Union on the development of alternative energy sources.

Statistics say wind and solar power have almost doubled since 2015 and accounted for one-fifth of EU electricity generation last year. Also in 2020, electricity generation from coal decreased by 20% - now this source provides only 13% of all electricity produced in the EU.

"The rapid growth of wind and solar has led to a decline in coal, but this is just the beginning," Dave Jones, Ember's senior electricity analyst and lead author of the report, said in a statement. not only move away from coal by 2030, but also from gas-based energy generation, as well as to replace nuclear power plants that are closing, and to meet the growing demand for electricity from electric vehicles, heat pumps and electrolyzers.

The quarantine measures against COVID-19 last year led to a decrease in the demand for electricity around the world. The report notes that since 2015, harmful emissions from electricity production in Europe have decreased by 29%.

EU leaders last month agreed to cut greenhouse gas emissions by 2030% by 55 from 1990 levels. In the United States, too, a similar process is underway: in May 2020, renewable sources provided more energy than coal for the first time since 1885.
